    Default softball slang

As a first year travel ball parent and a non baseball guy my eyebrows popped up when i heard some of the other softball dads throwing out some baseball/softball slang at a tourny.I humbley walked over the group of gentlemen hat in hand ,pride in the back of my throat and asked the question....... :-? :-? what is a CAN OF CORN????After they poked a little fun picked themselves off the ground and wiped there eyes they began the course of Softball Slang 101..As i hung on to every word and filed the sayings away in the ole memory bank i knew then and there that i was below the curve on softball talk.
Taking what i had learned from my lesson i decided to apply it at my dds rec league game or as we like to say live practice,my dd gets up to bat in her stance as she wheels the bat around my wife looks to me and says she is due for a good shot ya know,as i agree she pops one up into left field ,fielder takes two steps to the right and gobbles it up,i drop my head as most of us dads do and grumble a few words under my breath, the litl old lady about 60yrs old next to me lokks and says wow!! she really hit that one good. Now was my opportunity!! As i ilooked up from the bill of my hat i droped it...NA that was just an ole CAN OF CORN....As the old lady looked away in disbelief i observed my wife's neck about break from her eyes rolling so far in the back of her head..I knew then i had to find some more softball slang. Now i know dropping the slang terms on the elderly isnt the best practice but hey it was however my first time sorry about the long story..it was pretty funny to me ;D
So im putting out the call.....lets hear from some of the softball slang experts out there.

CAN OF CORN=easy catch-able fly ball
TWO IN THE WAGON..ONE A DRAGIN=two outs one to go

    Awesome topic!!! ?8-)

Here's a few to start you out that most everyone's heard before:

Going yard or Dinger---means an over the fence home run (like Martha says--it's a good thing)

Worm burner---ball that's hit hard along the ground

    Chin music---a brush-back or bean-the-batter pitch

    Bush league---dirty tactics ?>

    Heater---fastball

Meatball---easy to hit pitch in the middle of strike zone

    Ribbie---RBI (run batted in)

Strawberry---raw skin abrasion from sliding (badge of honor for some girls ?;D)

Caught looking---strike out without swinging (big no-no)

Plunked---being intentionally hit by a pitch (not that our girls ever do that ?:)

Bucket sitter or bucket jockey---Dad or coach sitting on the bucket the softballs came in (often with bad "crack" habit) ?

Hitting fungoes(?spelling? lol)---coach hitting fly balls for outfield practice (I just like saying it ?)

Rainbow---weak throwing, ball takes high looping path

Chopper---batter hits the ball down, really hard right in front of plate so it bounces high in the infield

Snow cone---when fielder barely catches the ball right in the top of her mitt (literally looks like a snow cone)

Paint the corners---good pitcher is catching the plate right on the edges for a strike

(I'll add more if they come to me) ?

Buzzing the tower... hitting the ball by or at the pitcher
Shooting the middle... same as above
Spin the clown... same as above ?lol
snapping one off... pitcher catching a line drive back at them

2 and a Q... losing 2 quick games in a dbl elim tourney and hitting the parking lot afterward
    bringing it... throwing hard
    bender... curve ball
playing small ball... bunting, stealing sacrifices
taking one for the team... being hit by a pitch
Texas leaguer... dink fly ball just over the infield
Punch & Judy... hitter who hits texas leaguers

Alot of these are from mens softball but still apply lol.

Charlie Brown'd him/her- low shot up the middle knocking the pitcher down.

Doing some yard work- Home run

    Twist it- turn 2-double play

I would not recommend that tourney- No walking tacos

"Nothing fat"-- pitcher is ahead in the count and should not throw any meatballs but should rather work either just inside or outside of the zone

"Way to Waste a Pitch" -- pitcher takes advantage of being well ahead in the count by throwing something well outside of the zone in the hope that the batter will bite

"Good location" -- pitcher takes advantage of being well ahead in the count by throwing something just a bit out of the zone but difficult to hit (e.g., a drop curve)

"Way to Work the Count" -- batter forces pitcher to go deep into the count, usually to a 3-2 count
