Slow pitch questions removed.....

1) It is a fair ball if the batted ball strikes the pitcher?s plate and rolls untouched to foul territory before reaching
first or third base.

2) Because an infield fly has been declared, the runners may advance but must tag-up even though the ball
is not caught.

3) When the plate umpire requests help from the base umpire on a check swing it is not considered an appeal
play.

4) A bat with a rubber or plastic ?cone? or ?flare? on the bat handle makes it an altered bat.

5) A substitute shall be officially in the game when reported to the plate umpire.

6) A coach is allowed to ?text-message? offensive strategy to the other base coach while in the coach?s
box.

7) B1 steps into the batter?s box with a bat that has a certification mark, but appears on the Non-Approved
Bat List. This is legal equipment.

10) With two outs, R1 on 3B and R2 on 1B, B5 grounds to F6 who bobbles the ball. R2 beats the throw to
2B, over slides the base and is tagged out. R1 scores from 3B prior to the tag. The run counts.

12) When obstruction occurs, the umpire should give a delayed dead ball signal regardless of whether or not
a play is made on the obstructed runner.

13) When a batter uses an illegal bat and reaches 1B safely, and the next batter steps into the batter?s box
with the same bat which is then found to be illegal prior to the next pitch, both the runner at 1B and the
present batter are declared out.

14) A batter who is hit by a pitched ball out of the strike zone is awarded 1B, even if the batter swings and
misses the pitch.

16) When a live ball becomes lodged in a defensive player?s equipment the ball is dead and all runners are
awarded one base.

17) A fourth out appeal can only be made on a runner who has scored.

18) B1 hits a ground ball to F6. While B1 advances to 1B, F3 moves to the colored portion of 1B to field F6?s
perfect throw which arrives prior to B1 touching the colored portion. B1 is out.

19) The pitcher may lick their fingers while in contact with the pitcher?s plate, but must wipe them off prior to
contacting the ball.

20) When a live ball becomes lodged in an umpire?s equipment or offensive player?s clothing, the ball is dead
and runners are awarded the base(s) they would have reached in the umpire?s judgment.

Alternate Questions T/F Fast Pitch
8FP) F1 is wearing a long sleeved undershirt that is optic yellow in a Junior Olympic 16 and under game. All
teammates choose not to wear any undershirt. The pitcher?s uniform is legal.

9FP) F1 must take a signal while in contact with the pitcher?s plate.

11FP) With no outs and B1 at bat with a 0-2 count, the pitch hits the ground before B1 swings. The batted ball
goes directly from the bat to F2?s glove and is securely held. This is a foul tip.

15FP) With two outs, R1 on 3B and R2 on 2B, B5 strikes out but the ball gets by F2. R1 scores and R2 is out
at the plate. B5 failed to run to 1B so F2, after tagging R2, throws to 1B for the fourth out. The run does
not count.

Multiple Choice
21) With no outs and R1 on 2B, B2 swings and misses. While R1 attempts to steal 3B, B2 backs up to readjust
their footing while in the batter?s box and bumps into F2 causing an errant throw. The result is:
a) B2 is guilty of interference, the ball is dead, R1 is declared out and B2 remains at bat.
b) B2 is guilty of interference, the ball is dead, B2 is out, and R1 is placed at 3B.
c) B2 is guilty of interference, the ball is dead, B2 is out and R1 is placed back at 2B.
d) There is no interference as B2?s actions were not intentional.

23) With no outs and R1 on 3B, B2 hits a fly ball to LF. While the ball is in flight, the coach pushes R1 back
toward 3B. F7 makes the catch.
a) B2 is out on the catch and R1 is out for being aided by the coach. The ball is live.
b) B2 is out on the catch and the ball is dead when the coach aided R1. R1 must return to 3B.
c) The ball is dead, R1 is out for the coach aiding R1 and B2 is awarded 1B.
d) The ball is dead, B2 is out and R1 is awarded home plate.

24) B3 erroneously bats in place of B1. The batting infraction is not detected until after a pitch to B4. The
correct batter is:
a) B4
b) B3
c) B5
d) B2

25) With R1 on 1B, B2 hits the ball past F3 untouched and it strikes R1 who is advancing to 2B behind F3.
In the umpire?s judgment, no other fielder had a chance to make an out. The umpire rules:
a) dead ball, R1 is out for interference and B2 returns to the plate to bat again with the same count
previous to the batted ball.
b) no infraction, play on.
c) delayed dead ball, obstruction.
d) dead ball, R1 is out for interference and award B2 1B.

28) With two outs, R1 on 3B and R2 on 2B, B5 gets a base hit to RF where F9 fields the ball and throws to
home plate to retire R2 for the third out. R1 scored from 3B and B5 is advancing to 2B when the defense
appeals that B5 missed 1B for the fourth out to nullify the run by R2. The plate umpire declares:
a) the appeal is honored and R1?s run will be nullified.
b) the appeal is honored but R1?s run will count because it is a time play and the run scored before the
appeal was made.
c) the appeal is not honored because it was not in time to prevent R1 from scoring.
d) the appeal is not honored because R2 was the third out of the inning and only the runner in
question who scored, R1, can be appealed for fourth out. R1?s run counts.

29) Who may wear a mitt?
a) The first baseman
b) The catcher.
c) The first baseman and the catcher.
d) Any player.

31) With R1 on 2B and B2 at bat, R1 attempts to steal 3B. As F2 attempts a pick-off, the throw accidentally
hits B2?s bat, which is in B2?s hands, and the ball rebounds toward the dugout allowing R1 to advance to
home and score. The umpire should rule:
a) B2 is out for interference.
b) R1 is out for B2?s interference.
c) R1 is allowed to advance to 3B only.
d) No interference

How times have changed.

There are some tough questions on here. That's why I only officiate poker games.

I provide answers for free...

Correct answers however, requires a fee.... ;D

When 20 or more try the test - I will provide the answers or maybe Bret will.

I'll stand back and keep my nose out of this one for awhile...

I would like to note that the ASA Umpire Test is intended to be "open book", so if you look up the answers that isn't "cheating". The test is designed more to highlight certain rules or situations and force the umpire to dig through the rule book for the answers, rather than to test memorized rule knowledge.

Most umpire associations I'm familiar with use it as a training tool- not as a method to certify umpires or qualify them to work at certain levels.

Have fun with it! :)

Looks pretty good! I only see a few wrong answers (I'm just going off the top of my head- don't have an answere sheet handy).

Hint for #17: You got #28 right! (ASA had a kind of weird interpretation on the "fouth out appeal" that is different from all other softball or baseball rule sets).

Since I took the test last week. Hint if you have an umpire case manual many of these questions are covered with the correct answer plus they cover the call. ?Johnnies the tough questions where the coed and slow pitch! ?For fun I asked an umpire the first question on this test. He got it wrong. ?The DP and Flex questions really get tough. Thanks for Bretman posting a couple of weeks ago, I got them right. If anyone wants to you can print out all 50 questions off the ASA site.

Re: Partial ASA Umpire test - come on coaches! Rea

Just a parent, giving this test a whirl. ?Hopefully this test will make people realize how difficult it is to umpire softball. ?It's tough to know all the rules because there are so many nuances to the rules mixed in with the differences between sanctions. ? I once coached volleyball; spent a few hours reading the rule book and felt like I had a pretty good understanding of the rules. ?Been around softball for quite a while and still have a lot to learn.

1. ?False - Foul Ball- my reasoning is that the pitchers plate is part of the field of play, similar to if it hit a rock and rolled foul.
2. ?False - Ball is live, therefore, if ball is not caught, then no need to tag.
3. ?True - guessing it is not an appeal unless coach appeals for the check swing.
4. ?False - not altered bat since on handle, but you could easily convince me that it was
5. ?True - but need to tell opposing teams of subs
6. ?False - definitely no texting or other electronic devices.
7. ?False - not legal if on non-approved list
10. ?Yes, counts because batter/runner wasn't retired
12. ?True - delayed dead ball - just guessing
14. ?False - if swings at ball, then strike, not HP
16. ?True
17. ?Know little about 4th out appeal - guessing true
18. ?True, but I'm guessing it depends on the umpire discretion
19. ?True
20. ? True
8. False - uniform can't be same color as ball
9. True
11. Out - caught foul ball
15. ?Run counts, because runner/batter not retired first, but not sure; ?don't know 4th out rule.
21. C
23. A
25. B
28. D
29. C
31. D

Re: Partial ASA Umpire test - come on coaches! Rea

Okay, I have a little time to kill between getting back from the beach and going out to dinner, so I'll take a crack at the test. Only thing is, I don't have a rule book with me on vacation!

1. False. This is a foul ball- same as hitting a dirt clod or rock and going foul.
2. False. If the ball is not caught, runners not required to tag. SAME as any other fly ball.
3. True. If I remember, the rules list all plays that are considered "appeal plays" (missed base, leaving early on a fly, batting out of order, etc.) and this is not one of them.
4. False. Kind of a guessing on this one! Think it makes it an "illegal" bat, not an altered bat (???)
5. False. They are considered in the game when they take their position on the field (can be an unreported sub).
6. False. Electronic communication devices cannot be used by coaches.
7. False. Non-approved bats are not legal equipment.
10. True. This is a timing play, not a force play.
12. True. Always signal and announce "obstruction" when it occurs.
13. True. Not 100% sure...pretty sure this is how it works.
14. False. Dead ball/strike if it's a swing.
16. True. About 99% sure on this one!
17. True. Obscure- and not the same as other baseball or softball codes- but true.
18. False. This is a play where the defense is obligated to use the white portion of the bag.
19. True. The wipe makes it legal (and, different from baseball!).
20. True. Another 99% sure...
8FP. True (?????)
9FP. False. May get signal anywhere- must simulate taking signal while on rubber (ie: pause, to prevent a quick pitch).
11FP. True. This play was the hot topic of debate for a few years- in baseball. One side said if the pitch hit the ground before the bat, it could not be a foul ip. The other side said that if the ball went directly to the bat, it is a legally batted ball and could be ruled a foul tip. Several professional baseball rules interpretors issued a definite ruling that this is a foul tip. I believe that ASA follows the same interpretation.
15FP. False. The run counts. This is that "fourth out appeal" thing again! Fourth out appeal can only be made against a runner who scored, so this is not a valid appeal.

OUT OF TIME! I'll finish the rest later. Let me know how I did, Johnnies! ?:)

Bretman. 4. Is a question right out of the casebook. In the casebook it states this is an altered bat. Otherwise we seem to agree. I still have all 50 questions from the test. I still have not looked up all the coed and slow pitch questions.

Johnnies I'm sure you were given the correct answers, but I agree with Bretman on # 16. That question is right out of the umpire case book and they have it T.?
