Congratulations Olivia...not only is OSU getting a great player, but an even more amazing student & person. I am sure your dad is thrilled that both you and Cameron are at the same school...saves on drive time:yahoo:

Olivia O'Reilly is a pitcher. She is probably 6 feet tall or so I would guess.

If I ask stupid questions please cut me some slack --my kid is a lowly freshman and I don't know a bunch about the recruiting proces , especially amongst power players like big ten or SEC schools but I've been told the big conference teams are locking up players earlier and earlier but this player is starting her senior year in a month or so and was unsigned ?

I'm hearing from a large amount of sources the type of talk that says to the 15 or 16u kid (HS fresh , soph's and some jr's) " State U is already got Player A,B,C etc etc lined up --if you don't get in quick you will miss the boat" and State U already has their pitching and catching lined up thru 2013. So was there some special circumstance to her recruitment that allowed an obviously very talented pitcher to go unsigned thru her 15,16, and 17u travel years ?

Don't read me wrong at all, I'm thrilled OSU is looking at local talent (IT"S THERE !!!!) but to hear a pitcher not signed in feb of her Sr year flys against all the talk I'm hearing. I've been told some Big U's have their pitching and catching set thru 2013 already. maybe that type of talk is the exception not the rule ?

MANITOUDAN==You are correct about a top division one program signing a pitcher or for that matter any player this late is rare they normally are a couple years out but things do happen. Injury,Transfer,ETC.
Most good div 1 programs already have there top 3 for 2012 and 2013 picked out. and are getting verbals from the 2012 right now.
Once in a while they will find that diamond in the rough. That's why they keep having camps(and the money too).

MD,

All I can tell you is Miami University already has offers out to their 2012 recruiting class.
So one would think if UM has theirs out already the big D1 teams certainly do.

Look @ OSU or Akron for instance - Amanda Abbruzzesse(sp) and Cammie Prantle for OSU and Kenzie Rhodes for Akron. Now I KNOW these aren't the only Jrs to commit but it answers part of your question - YES the schools are offering earlier.

As for O'Reilly, I believe she was hurt until later in the summer of 2010 travel season. Just a little bit of advice for ALL parents wanting a little coin to help with school - get your DD to as many camps as possible and email coaches your skills video and schedule ASAP. Also, check in with the coach to make sure he/she is interested.

O'Reilly was not injured or out this past summer ball season...that was her teammate and fellow pitcher, Erin Seiler, who was out most of the summer 2010 travel season recovering from a fractured rib. She recently verbaled to Univ of Akron, as a class of 2012 recruit.

MD - First, I do not know any of these recruits, so I am just speaking in general terms. As you know, there are MANY sides to every recruiting process. Simply because a kid is offered a roster spot doesn't mean she's going to accept the offer. Could be she also has some serious scholarship money on the table from a perceived "lesser" school. Remember, "outsiders" are only seeing the softball side of things, whereas the recruit and her parents are nearly always focusing on everything else, and softball may be much further down the list as just an added bonus. Sure, the softball IS important, because that's what initiated the scholarship offer in the first place! But it's only part of the bigger picture.

Again, not referring to any particular recruit, but some kids would give anything to realize a nearly life-long dream of being a Buckeye (for instance) - even going so far as being a walk-on when they could have had some decent athletic money at another program. Every kid/family is different with different goals/priorities. All this stuff affects whether a recruit signs early (November) or waits until spring, etc. The musical chairs, trading recruits and juggling behind the scenes is a very hidden part that is forgotten.

Good insightful post.

The sign of the times are early verbals. Prantl and Abbruzzese had offers from top programs in May of their sophmore seasons, and fortunately landed at OSU. Look how competitive it was going for Erin Gabriel, you have to shoot for it early to have a chance.

I know there is a 2013 in central Ohio who has several offers from top 20 schools, and still has visits. In the end, even with all the choices, I think she ends up like Marchantonio and McNeil(both could of gone to top 20 schools) at Kent. A 2014 from North Canton is getting many, many, looks and has been reported on unofficials, along with a 2015 pitcher from central Ohio. Talk about early! It is certainly the sign of the times!
