My DD attended a tryout last evening for a local organization. There was a good turnout - not just by girls hoping to make one of the teams with this organization, but there was also a pair of coaches from ANOTHER organization there. At first I didn't think anything about it until they actually reached out to two girls and made them an offer. This seems very wrong to me! Anyone have thoughts on this??

Maybe the team holding the tryout was looking for a specific role player and invited the other coaches to attend a mid-week tryout to assist them in filling their needs.

That's not right to be at another orgs tryout.

Some missing important details here.

Were the coaches lurking in the parking lot/just watching-not participating or were they actively watching/participating from the sidelines?

Lurking in the parking lot/not participating = bad.

Participating = it was a joint tryout.

Yeah, unless there turns out to be some other unlikely good reason, it's wrong ...

Welcome to travel ball! I have seen coaches bring their DD to another teams tryout to check it out, and have seen coaches from another Org passing out flyers about their tryout at another Org's tryout. It happens.

Yes, we hear about it happening every year, but it's wrong. What's harder to believe is that the parents of a DD poached like this would want to play for an organization that did this ...

So I will ask the question: If it is not okay to poach players, why is it okay to poach coaches when their players will follow them?! Especially during the season this seems to be quite under-handed.

Yeah...just another ugly TRUTH in our sport about those that are less than desirable types. I believe that it is as bad or even worse than player poaching when an organization "rep" calls, texts, invites for a meeting a coach from another organization about coming to theirs. its SIMPLE...they cannot build it on their own so they try to recruit someone that they believe can give them credibility in a particular age group. It doesn't have to even be a great coach but if they can bring the players then that's all that matters. What a terrible thing to do to another organization, team and players...SHADY!!! Ethical coaching practices and organizational integrity seem to be a dying breed...JMHO :(

I think it is fine to talk with players and their families as soon as their season is over about opportunities for next year, or even giving someone a card when in season and saying hey, I'd love to see you try out for our team for next year. But going to other team's tryouts to poach, or just flat out offering a spot while still in season are not right in my eyes ... too difficult for some of those players to keep focused on their current teams, and too hard for parents not to start talking or bragging about, and screwing up the cohesiveness of the current team and parents.

As for coaches, I feel most of them should have the maturity to be able to be approached by someone about coming over to another organization the following year without it affecting their performance or the team chemistry in the meantime. But I do not understand many of the wholesale changes of teams from one organization to another. While in some cases, I can understand it when it can be a real step up to an organization that has a proven record of showcasing the very top talent, but in other cases, it just feels like empire building or lining of pockets.

Just my opinions ... I might could be convinced differently on some parts of this ...

Not new. I don't think this happens much at the higher age divisions. Seems like a tactic of desperation on behalf of rookie coaches.

Since I've been a coach, I have always wanted to go to another organization's tryouts just to see: how they run it, the turnout, and the quality of players there. I have not done this, nor do I believe I ever will simply because I might be tempted to contact parents if I saw an outstanding player, and IT IS NOT RIGHT!

Somewhere between reality and winning the lottery.

I think if you approached a org and explained what you wanted to do they might just invite you to watch. You just best be on your best behavior.
