Would like to see the TSZ community to come together and ask/ Demand that Spano Dome would replace the existing "relics" used as bases (2nd & 3rd) with Safety Break Away or even "New" Style Low Impact or Slider Bases . Witnessed multiple girls being injured due to the existing bases used that have no give or cushion to lessen the impact.
I'm sure the minimal cost to replace could be absorbed using the $33,000.00 + generated with just the 79 Team entry fee's not including the Admission revenue from the 5 + Tournaments this winter.
Also disturbing that a Tournament could be held without any Ice or even a First Aid Kit available for Injuries.
So this is not viewed as all negative would like to add The Spano Tournament's are well run and draw alot of the Top teams in the area & Congratulation's to the 14u Champion Outlaw's 04' a very talented well coached team.

This doesn't make me happy or want to play there. We have never been there and we have a tournament there here soon and kinda makes me not want to let my child play :/

Maybe pass this on to Spano... These work great! Valley Extreme has used these (or very similar ones) for years on their fields.

That is probably the least of your problems. The black mold, lack of ventilation and smell of the chemicals that they mix with the dirt will leave you and your family sick for a week.

Just a thought if you stop playing there they would fix the problem or go out of business. But as long as teams are willing to play there they are not going to fix it.

This is the usual rhetoric we get after the Spano tournaments, usually its video of the 10u event where a coach is accused of telling his girls to cheat allegedly. My daughter have played there for years and was never injured sliding ,Imop not the best slider ,all ways late getting into the slide.I'd say a lot of the girls I see there do the same ,getting injured in the process.I do find it a little classless to suggest anyone who provides opportunities for our girls play year around and has invested plenty of money in lighting and sanitizing the faculty daily for us to play to make changes on your behalf because someone gets injured, maybe try volleyball? No dirt and not much potential for injury.I'd say let them know and don't come back ,don't worry someone will take your spot.Be sure to report from your other events on things done to there fields ,so well recognize you again.

I totally agree Okie. Since we are there all winter (sometimes playing on three teams) take lessons and utilize the facilities year round for pitching since my daughter was 6, I can verify that no one in my family has ever gotten sick. In fact, my daughter likes the smell of the dirt. She says it smells like home.
We can also verify the number of hours spent keeping it clean, scraping dirt, painting, building new seating, and fixing lighting (they have to drop the net to replace every light bulb) as we have witnessed all of it personally.
As for breakaways: I always think they are a good idea. But We did not witness one girl get hurt sliding at the high school level due to bases being stationary. Raspberries yes. Lots of those.

I have no experience with the facility so I am not going to comment on that. I do want to know how many fields out there actually have breakaways? I think they are a great idea but I do not think we have played on any fields that have them.

So you think investing in the Safety of these Kids is "Classless" Interesting I hate to see anyone injured when it is preventable. To Greatly reduce the possibility of injury (4) Bases could be replaced for $500. Too Much?? I hope there is never another injury regardless but I think you might have a different opinion if your DD loses a partial season due to an injury that is preventable!!

As far as hammerhead post I was not sickened or witness to the Mold or Chemicals he mentioned. As I originally posted I felt Spano runs a Nice Tournament and it is great for the girls to see dirt action in the middle of winter. With a few $$ invested this problem is resolved

I do agree with jt7663 on the break away bases. Albeit not the norm, I have personally witnessed/known girls who have broken wrists, ankles, and even tore ligaments with stationary bases. (And yes, you can do the same by tripping over a base so lets not have that argument!) Not all facilities have them or will change to them, but for the minimal investment, I do think it's worth the Spano Dome or anyone hosting tournaments to at least consider it. I get that teams carry insurance for accidents, but for the small investment to save even 1 injury is a no brainer. Our complex in New Middletown invested in all break away bases for our main fields a few years ago after a girl was carted off with a torn ligament! So yes, speaking from a little experience unfortunately. The peace of mind knowing we are doing whatever we can to make the sport a little safer is what it's about!

I would be happy with ice... injuries will happen, can we have ice readily available? I tend to forget to pack a cooler of ice in the middle of February... Two years in a row my DD was injured, nothing serious, but a jammed thumb or tweaked knee could use some ice...

No ,Don't mind your concerned w safety for the girls, just thought you didn't need to create a post about it ,Demanding the relics (your words) to be replaced and like they were too cheap to replace them .And of coarse you'd be the first one on here complaining about no where to get on dirt before spring, if they got tired investing a lot of there time and money and closed the place.Certainly a problem w any forum .Everyone wants to point out and complain about everything without opening there wallet,I'm sure they would recognize you if you payed for them and was there daily maintaining them etc.I think you'd rather just post to complain.

Yes, a facility who is hosting a tournament should have ice available and most that I've had teams playing do.

I would also think that the coach of the team should have icepacks at all times with him or her. That to me is a no-brainer.

The Coach did have the Icepack's but was looking for extra Ice as this was 2nd Base Incident for this coach. Asked Concession and several working admission only to be told they had no Ice or First Aid Kit with the mix Ice Packet's.

Endless supply of ice right outside the front door. As for the environment in there? I think it builds character

I don't reply much but you bring up the dollar amount as if the span dome is killing it. 33000 sounds like a ton of money, but you take out the cost of building, upkeep, taxes, insurance (property, liability, personal for idiots who like to sue people because they think they have tons of money sitting around) plus heat and electric 12 months and I bet the spans dome is probably profiting about 4 to 6 percent. So making 1600 to 2000 on tourney is probably bad investment for a person in business, most of us probably get a better return on investment from going to our jobs each day.

We had an indoor facility in Troy lasted all of three years. If you are lucky to get an indoor soccer facility ,like Action sports, to rent you an hour you are doing it at a facility that has to be subsidized by the city of Dayton and soccer plus outdoor summer leagues.

My point is it's next to impossible to make a living letting girls practice and play softball in the winter months in Ohio. The spano dome is an asset to Ohio travel ball and all the girls that get time to compete there. Hate that some girl or even three or four girls may get hurt sliding into a base. But that is the risk of playing the sport.

If people and teams stay away, then the spano dome goes out of business quite quickly. And that would be a true tragedy.

Safety is really really important, but guys do any of you remember the type of fields, outside ,we played on just 15 years ago let alone the 80s. So in the words of Dion Sanders

"Come on Man".

No connection to spano dome, other than played there a couple times. Have a great day.
