There are a lot of factors when determining the safety of playing a game. But what is you opinion on when it's too cold to play?

When it hits November, below 50 can be reason to call it!
When it is April, it can be 25 & everyone wants out on that field!!!

We played last night with the starting temp of 41 with a 16 mph sustained wind. The gust were up to 22. The wind chill was 33 degrees at 16 mph and below that when the wind blew harder. When we finished, the temp was 37. We have chain link fence dugouts and so, there wasn't any shelter at all. I thought we had an agreement with the maintenance crew to put up tarps for both home and visitor dugouts. They thought the game would be cancelled and so, they didn't even do the diamond. I had to get the diamond done as the other team warmed up. The visiting coach kept asking why we were playing. With those gust, it wasn't like a real game. I told her that my AD said we were playing and so, we had to play. The umpire told both teams to be swinging. If a pitch got forward movement toward the plate, it was a strike. I was about as embarrassed as I have been as a coach.

i think that common sense is the key. You cant really put a number on what temp. is too cold... you have to take in consideration a couple things... wind, wind chill, cloudy, sunny, radar of weather approaching and what time of the day the game is being played. HS games usually start 4:30 and it might seem to be ok at game start but in late May and April by 3rd or 4th inning the temp can drop significantly simply because the sun is setting. a little diff situation with a game on the weekend starting around noon, the temp can go up a little as the game is played and if there is no wind, it can be good to play. Use common sense. yes you have to be a coach and a weather specialist to be good but common sense prevails.

40 degrees or under is just plain miserable to play and watch softball. I guess you have to do what you have to do to get games played. Seems like its been 40 or below or 50 and raining every game this spring. Looks like a little warmer toward the end of the week.

It's a darn shame your AD put you in that spot. However, the UIC has control after the game starts. He/She should have called the darn thing after the first pitch given those conditions.
