Cincy Static Black went 5 and 0 to win at Rivershore (Hebron) beating the Doom 96 in champ game. Stingrays 3rd and Hawks 4th. Forecast was 80% chance of rain Saturday and it didn't, forecast Sunday was warm and sunny but it rained! :-/

Static Black got lucky with a terrible umpire that handed them the championship game in the international tie breaker

hittheball, I totally disagree. The Static won the game because they made the plays when they had to. Ump was not very good, but the calls evened out.

John,

I agree w/ Tony, that is a very classy reply John. I totally agree that the umpiring was not the best during the whole tourny & there was some very questionable calls in the championship game both for & against our teams. I think we both would always like to have the game totally decided by the girls on the field, but we all know that won't always happen.

Every time we play against each other, it is going to be a great game to watch. Lane & I were very impressed by Bailey, she threw great in both games & hit here spots extremely well.

I also wated to let the Hawks' organization know that they did an extremely nice job hosting the tourny!!!

Best of luck & see you on the field soon.

For me watching only the final game in this tournament I thought the umpire did a good job on balls and strikes. He gave both pitchers the outside corner, he was stingy with the inside corner but was calling the curve and drop well.

Having said that he did have a hard time with several plays on the bases. I would contribute that to not having a second umpire. That makes it tough.

I am posting this because of a play that occurred in this game. I unofficially questioned the call with the tourney director for my future knowledge because I heard about this happening in High School Ball this year.

The play was a bunted ball in fair territory that rolled forward then back into the bat the hitter dropped.

One team was yelling the batter is out; the ball hit the bat out of the box.
The other team was yelling foul ball. Both were wrong by rule. If the ball is bunted fair and then rolls back into the bat or the bat rolls into the ball it?s a live ball according to rule as long as the hitter did not intentionally drop or throw the bat into the ball.

The umpire called it a foul ball and brought the batter back to the plate with a strike. I felt this was a good call based on the fact he did not know the rule and really never gave either team an unfair advantage.

From where I was sitting, the bat hit the ball. Ball was bunted in front of the plate and the batter dropped the bat onto the ball.

okay my point

the ump in his judgement should either call the bat was dropped intentionally into the ball and the batter out or it's a live ball. Now I believe if the ball hit the bat or the bat hit the ball then rolled foul before being touched it's a foul ball.

I believe when the bat hits a fair ball a second time, the batter is out.

thread hijackers ---but a good informative hijacking :D So I guess the question that needs anwsering here is the intent of the batter who dropped her bat and it made contact with the ball in fair play. I'd guess in the majority of cases there is no intent , they usually bunt it, take off like a screaming meeme and run til someone stops them. If there was no intent the play should have continued , and she was safe/out at 1st depending on the throw. MD

I agree and the rule book says that if it was not intentional(not at 12U) and the bat is dropped on the ball or the ball rolls into the bat it is a live ball and play should continue.
As I said I don't think it made a difference because neither team got an advantage really, the batter did get a strike.

I just thought it was an interesting play and the umpire did a good job without even knowing the rule. His call was a do over/foul ball.

This was a good game to watch with two good 12u teams playing a hard fought game. Also very good pitching by both teams.

Sorry for the thread hijacking

The way I understand the rule is, intent only comes into play if the ball hits the bat. If the bat is dropped and hits the ball, intent does not matter, the batter is out.

JEM is correct, if the batter dropped the bat and it hit the ball the batter is out. If the bat was laying there and the ball came back and hit it, live ball! It is still up to the umpire though as to wether the batter intentionally interfered with the play.

sorry still unclear--if the batter UN-intentionally lays/slings (ha) ?the bat down and the bat rolls into fair play and makes contact with the ball what is the right call ? ? We all know at 10u and sometimes 12u girls sling the bat, coaches tell'em not to, they sometimes do it anyway. ?MD
