Doesn't look like next year's 14u USA/ASA Nationals are any better than Texas this year. According to what I have seen they are in Sioux Falls, SD. About the same journey time, things might be cheaper in SD than Texas.

About 6 hours difference in drive time for us. I wish we could have accepted our berth this year. They are hard to come by, so hopefully we are as fortunate next year. We will be attending if we get a berth next year.

Why so many turning down these berths?

At present we were planing to go to Norther Regionals in BG KY due to dates. Considering TX, yet we are currently only throwing 2 pitchers and have distiance issue. think we will talk about it this weekend in Orriville.

but if you did not finish in the top 4, then you do not deserve or should get the bid. I really dont think it is a good repensention of the State of Ohio when some of the best teams at the 14u were not even aloud to compete in the State Tournamnet without being forced to give up their prior bid..or by finishing 12th in STATES does not qualify you either.

You should have to beat and be the best, to go to the best of the best National tournament, instead it is sounding like A.S.A is making this the BEST OF THE REST THAT WERE LEFT TOURNAMENT.

By all rights anyone can go to "A" and "B" Nationals, but the ASA/USA Nationals Teams should really have to earn it by beating ALL THE BEST TEAMS IN THEIR STATE. (and not just some of them)

I am not apologizing for finishing 7th and accepting a berth. If we didn't get it here, we had two other chances to get one. We lost our first bracket game and came through the losers bracket and finally lost a tough game with the Classics. We have had a weird start to our season. After a fairly succesful run at USA/ASA nats last year as 13's, we brought back the core 8 from that team and added some great talent. We have not played up to expectations yet, but I expect we will be clicking by the end of July.

By rule I believe the teams that won a berth but declined are not eligible to attend the Eastern or Northern Regional. Hope they knew that before they won a berth. It happened to the Dragons a year or two ago.

Cincy Doom 95 finished 5th at states last year, just played bad that weekend. We received a berth when two teams chose not to go to ASA Nationals. We went 6-2 in bracket play and finished 17th out of 156 teams.

We just got off to a slow start last year. We played very well in July, and it carried into nationals.

You have those kind of years sometime, John. I sure hope the girls "click" for Nationals... something like the theory of Kentucky basketball... All season long pitfalls here and there... and then go to the NCAA final Four. Go figure.

If coaches could ever figure out the "clicking" thing... sure would make many of them more happier actually. ;)

Go to Nationals and give it all you got for the rest of us Ohioians. You represent the whole state.. Love to shove the thought of " the best teams are in the South and the West " theory so many have where the sun don't shine .

Looks like to me that nobody wants to go... so why bash on the ones that do want to go, people. Obviously, economics is a factor here.

Doing any fundraiser John to help go to Nats? You know many restaurants give back 10% percent of the fundraiser.... and God knows we OFC'ers like to eat. :D

@Parma Wildcats:

Couldn't disagree more with you. California and other teams have been running around the country for years chasing berths because they didn't qualify in their state or region. SoCal can chime in on what is happening now, but I would be surprised if California didn't pass down its berths to those teams who prefer ASA 16U to Premier. It's my understanding (only by hearsay) that if Ohio berths aren't used they get returned to the National Office for use by other states. Why would we want that? Do you have some special information that the Ohio berths sent out to other states would go to teams better than Cincy Doom 97? I sure don't and I expect Cincy Doom 97 will do very well in the tournament.
Made me a little sad to see that Buckeye Heat 97 had to decline, but I'm sure they had good and valid reasons.

It's kind of ironic that the 16u's have been beating each other up trying to get bids while bids in other age groups might be going unused. But it is also understandable given the recruiting benefits at 16u. You should understand, however, that some of our players received significant interest from playing in the 14u Nationals last year.

Is that a local rule?

ASA Code only bars "qualified" teams and defines them as:

Qualified Team is a team who has earned and accepted a berth to an ASA National Championship.

Probably another one of those Ohio things. Sigh. I do know that people have posted on OFC that the event actually happened. Whether the team unwittingly accepted the USA bid and then changed its mind to go to the Regionals, I do not know.

He is right though. Dragons team couple years ago already had Eastern bid. Won ASA States. Turned down bid but was told they couldnt go to Easterns. Not sure why and not sure why they turned bid down as it was in Illinois.

... California and other teams have been running around the country for years chasing berths because they didn't qualify in their state or region.

It was common for SoCal teams to chase ASA berths prior to ASA's huge increase in association berths 2-3 years ago. SoCal State went from 3 berths to 12-13. SoCal teams are chasing berths again this year - for Premier.

SoCal can chime in on what is happening now, but I would be surprised if California didn't pass down its berths to those teams who prefer ASA 16U to Premier.

SoCal ASA passes down their berths and it is happening big time this year in 14u - a team that finished tied for 24th is going to Midland. There have only been 1-2 teams that declined berths the last couple years, but this year is a different animal due to teams opting to stay here and play Premier instead of going to Midland.

It's my understanding (only by hearsay) that if Ohio berths aren't used they get returned to the National Office for use by other states.

Hosts can add teams according to the Fill-In Procedure (see Article 510.E). They are entitled to add at least 8 teams. More can be added up to the tournament's capacity or 138 teams - whichever is less.

It would be impossible to say an Ohio berth went to another state because there are far more unused berths than any host could fill.
