I have no dog in this fight...DD didn't play in it...but I am amazed at some of the shots that have been taken here. Seems like we play these games for our DD's and the competition so they get better and hopefully acheive their goals of playing in college. I played baseball on concrete as a kid. no complaints. Seems like the nanny state we live in has come full circle even to select sports. Sounds like 12u was the meat grinder everybody thought it would be. Congrats to the Classics and to Kep's Hawks for battling all they way back to get out of the loser's bracket.

There were great games played by some very good teams in the 12U grinder. Our girls grew and learned a lot ...Congrats to Kreston and the Classic for excellent pitching & hitting. They were able to slow down the awesome hitting of a very strong Kepple team who fearlessly won 3 straight coming out of the loser bracket to the championship game. The Stingrays put on a hitting display that was fun to watch, except when it was against us.

All and all, a 2nd seed in pool play and a 4th place finish for our first year team in a very tough and competitive tournament - not too shabby. The hard work is paying off and we got better!

Doug,
I had my girls say hello to two college coaches. I know it was shameless, but I am glad to be one of the 40...lol Great job!!!

I for one am glad Doug is running this show instead of a few who have posted here. Doug I believe takes the criticism and works to make things better. That is his pattern. Always improving. Others don't want anything to improve and feel if you criticize you are whining. Hey I played with a stick and a rock and if you want better for your kids you are a wimp and a whiner. "S u c k it up and play the game". I had to walk up hill in my bare feet, both ways, just to get to the fields and back, no complaints. hahaha.

Hope they aren't coaches who don't want their teams to improve either. Maybe just don't want their tournaments to improve. Can you imagine if they had a thought about a player not playing well?? They would be whining about their own player! " She is dropping her hands, she can't hit a thing. Oh wait that would be whining, get out of my head thought, get out. Come on, s u c k it up and let her play. hahaha

Nobody is saying to string anyone up or tar and feather them and run them out of town. It's simple critizm. Be big boys can handle it. lol. Hate to speak for him but I believe he can handle it and he will use it to make improvements like he has been.

JMHO = Just My Honest Opinion. :)

Just a curious question... of those of you who had teams finish first or runner up in your age groups... what are your thoughts on the " plastic ware " that was given out ? ;&

It's not about hardware at the 18u level it's about playing at a high level against great teams. Hopefully if you get to play college ball you get hardware when you graduate, a DIPLOMA.

I would have thought that there would be a let down playing travel ball this year for some of the college players returning but there wasnt. They all got together, hugged , laughed , and got caught up before the game but when they stepped on the field the competitive fire took over.

You could have gave them a soda can and theyd have been happy.

You are right about that Chris, I think it was just as fun for the parents. Lost my voice this weekend.

I've always said the people that are "Do-ers" are the ones that set themselves up for criticism...while others sit back and complain about what the do-ers are doing. Some people go out of their way to create opportunities for others, and for what? To have others sit back and do nothing but complain about this, that, and the other thing. Sure, there are several things I do not like about the Kettering field complex, but it is no fault of anyone running this tournament. Heck, Shorty was out watering the fields for the 8:00 am games. We all played on the same fields so it isn't like one team had an advantage over the others. The porta potties gross me out too, and I swear someone had "an early exit" before they got into the pottie. What was that thing on the ground in front of the pottie on the right??? Yikes! Even with the nasty Porta potties, if you walked a little farther between the fields there is an indoor toilet with running water and everything you need for a successful restroom experience.
As for college coaches...I saw Wright State very well represented on Friday and Saturday....probably there Sunday too, but I left after our early Sunday morning departure from tournament play. Saw UD, Miami, and WSU all at our games, PLUS I saw Salsbury University's (all the way from Maryland)new assistant in the stands at the game scouting some of the local talent.. She is going to do big things!!!

I would like to thank Doug and the Ohio Hawks organization for hosting a very solid tournament! As with any large scale tourney there will be legitimate issues that arise and I'm sure moving forward you will address. Thanks again for adding another highly competitve tournament to Ohio.

P.S. As a coach I really liked the engraved crystal championship trophy as it was different but your dad/dd reference was hilarious! I have no dd on the Laser Green, that was my stud 3B/P Hannah B. whose sister plays on the Lasers Orange...lol :)

I just want to give a big thank you to the tournament staff. My daughter was KO'd first thing Saturday morning with a knee to the side of the head. The tournament staff did a great job getting her the help that she needed and ushering her off to the hospital. The coaches are like family and always take such good care of my daughter on the field, but the staff was attentive and worked very quickly to get her the help she needed.

Turns out it was just a concussion, so we will be taking the next couple weeks off! :)

Thanks again to everyone who helped us on the field and sent the well wishes and prayers!

Seeing alot of things being said regarding Dayton Metro. WE have played in this tourn for the past three yrs and believe that it is a must have on any teams schedule. last yr was knocked out early and we still felt it was a great tourn to be apart of. Seeing such great competition from game to game is what makes this so great. Walking tacos are great and all but I dont believe that those are what make a tourn great. Quality is in the teams and how much work the Hawks put into it and I know we appreciated it all. I was able to have great conversations with so many coaches, even as we were playing each other. Met sooo many great parents as I coached first base. So I hope everyone can see what the draw to this tourn really is. Thanks again to the Hawks!!!!!!

I have a question to ask everyone. Wilson is one of our Hawks sponsors so we used Wilson ASA .47 core leather softballs. Folks said they sounded soft, me included (at times) .. but I watched all weekend and I don't think they performed any different. The Wilson rep came out on Sunday and we discussed it and he watched some games as well...

What was everyone's thought? Did you notice? was it only the sound or did you think they performed differently?

I had just got there when that happened.. the ASA guys were on the phone calling it in right away. Our first year the city put an ambulance on site, I will see if they will do so again next year. They handled it great, the staff did a great job calming her and attending to her... so glad that she was not seriously injured....

The balls were fine. I saw shots at the 12u division all wkd. I was going to protest the balls after playing Kepple - I thought they were juiced.

We noticed it on Friday for sure, they sounded like mush but come our first game Saturday morning the balls sounded different and performed better.

I didn't notice any difference in sound or performance of softballs, and no one said anything to me about that.

Which model were they? The A9031 have polycore inside and the A9060 have cork. I've read the cork centers break down quicker - an 18u qualifier said the balls were turning into mush by the 4th inning.

For the most part I also thought the balls were very soft - even when new at the beginning of the game. My pitchers made some comments to me that they balls felt different & even the seams felt weird - this was on Sunday. There was one ball that we could actually move the cover w/ our hands on Sunday.
