I am not complaining about the quality of teams there nor the umps. Yes some bad calls, but it is what it is. I did like having the brackets all laid out well in advance. The reporting of them was a mess though. Don't think the TD is responsible for all of that though. Pretty sure some coaches were not texting in finals. Plus at least the back fields did not have brush covering the field like last year.

Areas to improve are

Field conditions including fences

Maintain restrooms. (No paper towels from the get go)

Maintain the brackets accurately.

More vendors

I think this has the possibility to be a great tournament.

geesh, rough crowd. No good deed goes unpunished and this is why we duck when it comes to putting on a ASA/USA event when asked to do so. Noooo sirreee bob! Plenty of mistakes, plenty of good... as with all news, only the bad stuff comes to the front for the fun stuff can't be as dramatic. And I'm not a paid spokesman. Just sayin'...

I have my beefs with every single tournament and probably every single umpire in one way or another, even with a victory. I surely had them in this event, really, not much different.

I would say that the only good thing about this event is the level of competition..... it is unbelievable. With that being said, there is absolutely nothing that the "host" organization has to do with this. If you take away the ASA/USA births they would be lucky to get 4-5 teams in each age group.

The real complain here is that this is the 4th year (i think that's right) this event has taken place and EVERY year it is the same old same old. Every year.... poor restrooms, nasty porta potties, no fences, no lines, no raking, wrong base paths, wrong pitching distances, poor bracket updates, crappy concessions. Every year it has always been said.... we will fix it for next year. This is the 4th consecutive year and NOTHING has been corrected. This is a MAJOR event and these conditions are unacceptable.

I think this has the possibility to be a great tournament.

Considering the entry fee that is higher than most any other in the state shouldn't it already be a great tournament?

A few more ramblings from the peanut gallery:

On two different fields I watched blue roll a ball to the pitching rubber at the start of the game. Each time the ball completely disappeared. I know this can be a problem anywhere and pitchers have to deal with it. The key to me was there were no attempts at any field maintenance from what I could see and the depth of these holes potentially a danger to the pitchers.

It can be a great tournament, but will require a much higher level of attention, organization and cooperation from the Hawks, Dayton Metro ASA and the City of Dayton. The competition is there, the location is good.

I was impressed by the number of college coaches drawn to the event as well.

Besides all the negative about the tournament anyone see or watch any good teams or players that stood out?

Ya might want to think about starting a new thread. I have a feeling this thread will remain negative.

Tourney has its faults. My only beef besides smelly port a johns was the umps. (For those of you to say that is always the case --- it isn't)

Most were flat out awful in the 14u site. They cost us the ability to move on in Bracket play.

Coach - your catcher can't be infront of the plate when the ball is hit into the outfield????? Coach - it was my bad on that last call..... I know bases were loaded and I called a double play. Coach - that was a foul ball when 2 runners scored. Coach - you have a really good team.

Other than that it was a good day.

Well with most of the comments on here negative ,I would like to find something positive to say. **** I can't find any. Besides the field conditions I would say the worst thing in this tournament was the umpires. Being connect with travel ball coaching , asst coaching and being a dad. I would say this was the worst umpiring I HAVE EVER SEEN. I saw in 1 game at least 7 calls that we're terrible. That's not counting for the pitch calling of balls and strikes. I don't post on here often. But I had to on this. Doug you had some very good teams here. To bad it wasn't a better tournament. I went to Bat Wars in Columbus and saw some very good umpiring , great field conditions and no **** running out of porta pots. Rather play there with less of competition and have safety of our players on terrible pitching mounds at Kettering Fields. My daughter is a pitcher and her back is hurting because of the10" drop off on the mound jamming her back.
Thanks Softball Dad

It's a perfect time to fix those holes from re-occurring next year-- just go buy some good mound clay and dump it in where the holes are and tamp it down about an inch from ground level--- there will not be a problem next year if this is done now.

One of the Porta-pots was literally mounded up above seat level..don't even want to know how that was accomplished. Same one the urinal had a reservoir in it...and this was just one..others were almost as bad

Fences should have been there and yes some rude umps..very unfortunate for such a large tournament. The text updates of scores were nice when correct

The porta potty thing is pretty bad, but they do have restrooms with flushing toilets at the main complex, and also out towards the river at the other building with the blue roof. If you walk a couple hundred yards you can at least sit down on a flushing toilet.

For all of the above reasons is exactly why we decided to do Bat Wars. Its the same old, same old every year. Plus this early in the season we want games to figure things out. (Thanks school ball.) So with 7gg and $100 cheaper and playing at a premier park, it was a no brainer for us. There are other qualifiers out there. Plus I refuse to pad you know who's pocket. JMHO.
