ASA rule changes

Ouch dude! OK I'm not saying it's a benefit to our pitchers, but I would just rather stick with one distance. Changing between NSA, USSSA, ASA and TD's who modifiy ASA by doing 43' anyway messes up their calibration. Same with the hitters. I would just rather they all did one distance and stick with it.

Completely agree. It makes life so much easier, and with our dd's being pitchers, we need the less stress :D

43ft and spikes for 14s is all but a certainy with ASA...with PGF already making the change. It's good for the pitchers and continuity and also puts emphasis on being able to play the field..with giving batters a spilt second longer in decision making at the dish. Good overall change for the sport.

ditto on the 43'... simplify and safety! Defense is going to have to be tough which is just fine by me! Like others said, wish it was this way last year. As far as steel spikes, it should be up to the players IMO.

14u should have the same rules as 16u and up. The kids play against each other in highschool. Whats the difference? The difference is you are getting them prepared the right way, then when school ball comes it is usually the awesome school coaches trying to change them and then the travel coaches have their hands full before the first tourney, not always but usually. Just my two cents worth. Some school coaches are pretty good though.

I thought about half of the 14U players would still be in Middle School (Junior High). I thought those middle school teams were at 40' and did not allow metal spikes. It seems to me that there will still be a good bit of having to jump back and forth for some players. As long as travel ball is organized by age and school ball is organized by grade I don't see how you can avoid having some players impacked by diferences in rules.

I always thought travel ball should be by grade. Makes more sense to me.

yeah but "by grade" could have girls that are driving at 12u.... We faced some teams that drove to practice at 12u. ;&:lmao:

Always have the gray areas. The game is evolving and I see this as a safety measure (the 43' part) and the cleats issue to me is lesser other than it costs more having 2 different shoes in the bag. One could also argue the "feel" is different and I'm sure that holds water for some and not others.

definately like the move to 43' -- they will be there soon enough so might as well join the party now!!! metal spikes... not so sure about that with many girls just moving up from 12U to metal spikes??? safety issue in my eyes!

Older 14u girls already have played a High School season and 13u girls even though they pitch 40 during 8th grad are now done with 8th grade in summer. Might as well get them ready for High School. So I like 43 feet move for 14u. That gives them 2 years at 35 for 10u. 2 years at 40 during 12u to mature to that distance.

My question is will they ever move bases back to 65 feet? I feel that would bring even more defense into the game. Would love to see a good SS be able to go into the hole and have a chance to throw someone out.

I would think not, unless they move college back. That would be like having HS f00tball at 110 yards, then going back to 100 for college and pros and it would slow the game down like baseball. JMHO

Ohio Nightmare 97 has a sweet SS that does this or did last year! Unreal player. Also saw Crown Point 98 (at 12u) SS do the same numerous times, once to us . IMO, some of the 2 best I've ever seen at SS at a younger age and very rare players IMO. Very talented and fun to watch.

Approval by Play Rules Committee
Please note: This is a tentative list as all must still be approved by General Council

JO 14U Girls FP change pitching distance to 43'

Approve the new SP only certification mark

Remove 44/375 ball from approved list for all aspect of the men's SP game EXCEPT Seniors

Allows a mix of colored adult men's headgear as long as the colors are that of the team

Remove "headband" from the rule regard headgear. Still approved, just not mandated in color or style

Allow JO 14U Girls FP players to wear metal cleats

Offers specific direction for the confiscation of illegal equipment at National Championships

Clarifies that unreported sub as a batter becomes official when noted and assumes the existing count

Add runs ahead rule of 12 after 4 inning to MP game

Creates maximum runs allowed per inning limit to Seniors game

JO Boys FP now following Men's FP rules as they pertain to required contact with pitcher's plate prior to start the pitch and stepping out of the 24" lane on the pitch

Remove wording in MP game that requires the pitcher to hold the ball in both hands prior to starting the pitch and brings the rule in line with the FP game of only requiring the pitcher to bring the hands together

Change the BR status on a BOO ruling. BR at bat will now be negated if put out during the play prior to the proper appeal of batting out of order.

In Senior game's courtesy runner rule, you cannot sub for a CR or the player for which he is running except in case of an injury.

Thought you might want another update.

My 98 DD played up last year and made the switch to spikes. It took 3 games to blow up her ankle.

It is very important for them to learn to slide properly in metal, especially on a hard dirt surface. Molded plastic is much more forgiving of a poor slide. Go in to slide with your foot down and consider it stapled to the earth as your body rushes over your foot. Been there got the surgical scars to prove it.

Thankfully, it's not mandatory, so they can choose not to wear them. I do think that it will become important for them to really work on a proper slide if they choose to go the metal route.

But how many will wear them before they learn the proper mechanics of sliding because of peer or parental pressure ? ;&

So sorry to hear that. My 16yo is done with metals. Better to slip than to stick IMHO.

Have not seen many if any problems due to metal cleats besides a occasional cut. And lord knows I have seen a lot of games.
