Base Runners Timed, Speed from Home - 1st, Home - Home?

Looking at your current roster or past roster of Fastpitch Softball Team(s).

What the fastest speeds/times of any Girl Softball players that you coached?

From Home - 1st Base?
From Home - Home?

Was you Coaching a Elite Team?

What would be unacceptable base running speed for Girls playing at the highest level of Girls Softball?

Anything below.

0.00 Home - 1st base
0.00 Home - Home

What is a acceptable base runners speed that you feel comfortable as a Coach stealing bases?

1st base - 2nd base?
3rd base - Home?

Talking about bases runners speed only now.

Based on Base Running Speed only, you should be playing?

Elite Travel Ball
Home - 1st base? 0.00
Home - Home? 0.00

Travel Softball only, Stay Close to home.

Home - 1st base? 0.00
Home - Home? 0.00

Stick to recreational softball.

Home - 1st Base? 0.00
Home - Home? 0.00

We all have seen players that aren't great base runners when it come to speed. That play at the elite level in Girls Fastpitch Softball because of pitching skills, hitting skills and even some of your catchers now days can get by with out great base running speed.

Were all aware of that, so let's keep this thread on topic and discuss base runners speed.

My question is, is there a standard way to time a baserunner? Do you have them start in the batters box with/without a bat and say go? Let them start when they want and then push the button? Give them a bat and use a pitching machine and start the clock on contact? or some other way?

Light curtains on a known surface to eliminate field and human error contributors.

Now I have to ask, we just had 1000 and 1000 of post on tryouts. Don't they time the girls for speed anymore?

Or is someone afraid, someone maybe scouting online?

Tim and I had a player 2-3 years who ran off a 2.62, 2.63, and a 2.65 home to 1st at a showcase/coaches clinic in front of 10-12 coaches. Everyone of their jaws were on the floor...... fastest i ever saw.

I would say a good speed would be 3.00 to 3.15 home to first, from batters box! Home to home 13.00-13.25

Banditfest had a 2.55 and 2.60. Amazing. I've seen personally 2.61 and 2.64 there. Home to home, the 2.5 girl was 10.5 or right at that. It was all posted online after the event.

Straight 20 yard dash, line to line, on first movement. That's the way college coaches want it.

Very interesting. I wanted to know what a good time was for 10u vs. 12u vs. 14u and up. Wouldn't you think, it gets quicker as the girls get older, to a certain point? I remember my HS coach saying the fastest runners were the 9th and 10th graders. Who knows?

Seen a girl at this years tryout who ran a 2.69 to first and a 11.43 seconds this year at a tryout we attended. It was for 14U and most girls were running around the 13 to 14 seconds mark.

We have one that runs in the 2.8 range, from the left side, with a bat, and the clock starts when the ball "tings". We have her bunt. But we put it on video so they can see where that number comes from. I think as long as you can show what your time is based off of they are fine with it, from the feedback I have received. Fast is fast. We wanted to show her speed in a real situation. I think it comes across well.

I have a right handed girl (12u) that had a decent home to first but her home to home was 11.98.. As soon as she rounded 2nd we knew she was gonna get under 12.00.
