Re: Bat rolling, and shaving. Really???

What do you mean by restricted flight? Wiffle balls are a type of restricted flight ball...

Prior to 2013, the standard ASA 12" SP ball was .44 COR and 375# compression. The new ball is .52 COR (livelier) and 300# compression (softer). I checked with SoCal ASA about the new balls and this is what they had to say:

We have been using this ball for 3 years now and it is awesome. It is a great ball as it takes the altered/hot bats out of play.

NSA has decided to go with a similar ball next year for all NSA play. (.52 C.O.R. and 275 lb. compression)

Welcome to the SSL @ WSU (source)

Consider two balls of the same COR but made in a way that they have different hardness (or compression). Next allow these two balls to impact the same hollow bat. Upon impact the harder ball will produce more barrel deformation and consequently less ball deformation than the softer ball. Essentially the harder ball exchanges some of its ball deformation (which dissipates energy) with barrel deformation (which does not dissipate energy). It is for this reason that the batted ball speed generally increases with increased ball hardness and decreased barrel hardness. Note that the trampoline effect is negligible for bats with very stiff barrels. These may include hollow bats with thick walls or solid wood bats.

Unfortunately I don't think it is just a rumor. I heard this at a tourney 2 weekends ago and was pretty upset. There is no reason for this if you teach them how to hit properly. If one of our girls was injured by a player using a suspected rolled bat, I am afraid that Jerry Springer show somebody else mentioned might break out.

When that coach also sends disparaging emails of his former players and emails the teams she is trying out for also points out HE is trying to win with trying to black list the player despite HIS lack of talent to teach and then resorts to offer rolling the bats to improve, possibly his players performance is not up to his ability to teach them how to hit.

It will come out who this person is when HE least expects it at a tournament. We only hope no one gets hurt while the investigation goes forward. Officials have been notified.

It's obvious a few here seem to know who this coach and organization is. My guess is that the bat doctoring is purely rumor otherwise someone would have spilled the beans having undeniable proof. If the proof exists, why be mum about it?

Len totally agree, however letting it go through the channels to let them investigate it makes it better than rumor.
Then if HE is caught it will make it even better. However HE knows people are watching and hopefully it prevents someone from getting hurt......just my opinion.

Very true. If the bats are indeed doctored, I hope this coach and the knowing parents pay a severe penalty.

If someone knows this for a fact then then they should have made it known to whoever need be before they even posted on here and then blasted them on here for doing something so careless with the safety of peoples children.

Any bat that fails should be confiscated. Any line drives that cause an injury, and the bat should be confiscated and sent out for testing. Any bat that has been proven to be altered, and the offender should be subject to legal ramifications. How can anyone say that this equipment is too expensive? Wow! Did you really just put a price on safety?
Yes 43, I put a price on safety...for cryin' out loud I was just telling you why bats are not tested at every tournament.

I believe in ASA it is a lifetime ban on the player and coach. I wish I could resurface the info I had last year. This getting old stuff ****s

I am still confused by all of this and agree with some others that this should be addressed immediately. What are the "proper channels" in a case like this, and can we be sure that it will be resolved before this team plays in another tournament, presumably this coming weekend?

I agree...almost afraid to send a twelve year old out into a warzone. Sounds like they might need more than facemasks and heart guards if now needing to deal with ammo coming off of altered bats.

As the Father of an '02 12U pitcher, I want to know who it is! Because heaven forbid, my DD take a shot on the mound from one of his bats. It will take the entire ball park to try to drag me off of him while I rip his heart out. The lawyers can have him after I am done.

Maybe this thread will hopefully cause any offender(s) to be swinging new sticks next week ? I heard the rumor , I know where the finger is being pointed . I hope its all smoke , but with this much smoke I'd expect those bats ( or at least a couple ) to be sent off for testing . If the machine is too expensive to have on hand , then over night mail it to where ever there is a testing device and get those bats tested . sounds fair to me.

I think many people will be looking for new sticks being used this weekend.

Is there a way to tell if a bat has been rolled/shaved by the physical appearance of the bat? If not, how will the umps pull those bats in question from a game? And as somone else pointed out, what will stop that player from using that same questionable bat in another game even if it was pulled during the weekend?

Maybe instead of seeing a vendor selling hairbows, we will see a heart guard vendor in the next several weekends.

My DD has had an Evo Shield for the last 2 years. It came in handy at ASA/USA Nationals last year. Some big, hard hitting girls at 10U from the West Coast.

Sadly "No". If the bat was shaved by someone that knows what they were doing you will not be able to tell the end cap has been removed. Compression test is the only way to know and just because a bat fails that does not mean it has been altered. There is no way to know if a bat has been rolled. From what I have been told "rolling" breaks the bat in more evenly, does in minutes what will take your DD thousands of swings to do.

You used to be able to tell from a train track like pattern groove up the length of the barrel about a 1/4 wide. Misfit or adhesive around the cap also.
In slow pitch, you can buy graphics of a legal bat and apply them to a "hot" banned (miken ultra usually) bat and clear coat it.

You cannot count on a compression tester working either. They are not accurate.

THis is correct. I have seen bats right out of the wrapper with no swings fail.
