Good luck to Erin at TN. One of my high school players got a job at TN and the softball program. She has nothing but good things to say about Ralph and Karen.

Thank you. The Ohio softball community has been so supportive of Erin. I appreciate that.

Since I have no personal knowledge of OSU recruiting ( I have met Coach K at camps and clinics), I'm thinking they just aren't don't have an "A" game when it comes to recruiting Ohio girls. I think that is changing as evidenced by the increasing number of Ohioans on the roster. But since Kim Reader left, (CA girl) the pitching has been horrendous, mostly because of injuries, and OSU has been scrambling for somebody, anybody, to put in the circle. And that shows in the results. Two last thoughts -- I would think that a school with the supposed resources and devotion to athletic excellence that OSU is would be more effective in building a deep program. Second, that school up north seems to be successful with an awful lot of Michigan girls on its roster who are playing important roles. Why isn't it done in Columbus? Is it coaching?

Best of luck to Erin ... nice to meet you Steelers fan .. just one request .. NEVER .... EVER .... NEVER sing that dreadful Rocky Top stuff lol !

PS After seeing Jenna Modic pitch I'm not convinced she couldnt have been an OSU recruit .... she is really really good. Miami of O got a steal there.

Modic is a great pitcher! She will probably be Miami of OH's starting pitcher with this being Jessica Simpson's last season. They sure did get a great recruit in Modic.

I’m out of line here but feel it needs to be said. A point of interest; A few seasons back, Coach K had an assistant named pitching coach that was all the rage at the moment. She was going to revolutionize the pitching at OSU and beyond with her rendition of a windmill pitch. While at the time I have to admit I saw no harm in her methods, there must have been something deeper that I didn't pick up on. All the sudden, the entire pitching staff was plagued with injuries and was totally ineffective in competition. After a few seasons this assistant moved on with her career. I'm wondering what happened here just a short season or 2 after OSU had qualified for and played in the big dance tournament. I'm sorry if this is too blunt but something happened here. Kim Reader (spelling) was very effective as well as her back up and a freshman was on board with lots of promise before this pitching instructor began interjecting her style/mechanics. Directly after, something began to stink in the kitchen. Even though that pitching coach is gone, I sense the lingering effects of something still not right.

I once had a professor state the true meaning of an "expert" in which he claimed "An expert is a person that can lead you in the wrong direction with confidence." You have to be able to absorb the information, process it, and take from it the points of interest that make sense and help. If this coach, or any coach, is teaching something wrong than wrong is still wrong. It doesn't become right just because an "expert" says so.

Coach K is one of the most beloved coaches at OSU for many reasons that extend outside the softball program. I don't see her losing her job. She'd have to resign. I don't believe the A.D. Dept. has a quest to make the OSU softball program a top priority. It's not drawing enough media attention to get the respect from the office. I know, vicious circle bla bla bla. Facts are facts and in order to get the respect we'd like them to have, a coach would have to do it thru a back door. In other words, sneak in a great season flying under the radar. That may require some changes but it'll be in staff, not Coach K.

Just my opinion cause I'm not an expert.

Hey MD,
It was grat to meet both you and your daughter. Good luck to your team. They can swing a bat!!!

Jenna is a great pitcher. She and Erin have been playing together since PeeWee ball. It will be strange next year.

As for Rocky Top...I can't make any promises. It is the kind of tune that sticks in your head. It takes me a week to get rid of it after a visit there..lol!

Boss I agree with you - and then I saw last week where the Womens Lacross team was in the top 10 (?). I am sure there is even less athletic department support being given to that sport - and yet the coaches are able to recruit to compete nationally.

I agree that Coach K is a great person on and off the field. I can not say that she is a great recruiter though. That is evident by the results. The opposite can be said about Hutch - referenced in an above post. Like Coach K she is a great person - loved by all. But she is a relentless recruiter. We see her down here all the time - even if she is just coming in for one day - maybe just to see 2-3 games. It's interesting when she sits in the stands at a game she gets the same buzz as UCLA, Ariz, UF, Alabama, etc, coaches.

As I posted earlier - after the stadium redo I expected to see an uptick in tOSU Softball program. Didn't happen. But unlike Boss's feelings, I don't see the Athletic Department living with this too much longer. Hopefully Coach K catches lightning in a bottle and turns it around.

Jenna is a great person and a great pitcher . They still will have a girl by the name of Paige Meyers down there that's not to shabby!

How does a school from 2500 miles away come to a high school game during the middle of their season (college) nationally ranked in the top 5 and get the best prospect in the state , a 9th grader ? And right in your own back yard , literally in your own back yard . Mind boggling to me , experts please reply, and then let me know how we missed erin gabriel! Someone needs to WTHU !

Hay hay, don't you know Ohio girls can't play with the big dogs. That's exactly an example of why I started the topic. Now with that said, did they ever talk to her?

If it was a bigger importance sport, coach would have been gone, also after reading above about pitching coach, why would you mess up what you brought in throwing wise? Enhance it yes, but don't break it. Know another D-1 that made a kid with a rocket arm as a fielder change and the motion blew her rotator. Why mess with what you brought them in for????

Because college coaches do that. Mine was recruited for her stick then they changed the swing. If it works the coach is a genius. If he fails and messes up a kid then he will just go find another pitcher hitter fielder catcher. At the D1 level they are always looking for someone better to replace you with.

OH kids can play at the D1 level next to kids from all over the country, I have seen enough college games now to believe if you take the same number of OH kids vs say California kids, put them in the same color uniform mix em all up toss em on the field it would be hard to tell who is who. Where they have us is pure depth of numbers.

I know the Tenn team will have a tone of good pitching. They have the three sisters lined up. And they can all pitch!!!

If TN is so deep in pitching why wouldn't Erin go to a MAC or D2 school where she could possibly be their stud 4 year pitcher? I know playing for TN is pretty prestigious and quite an honor to be recruited there but I bet Erin, like all athletes, do not like sitting the bench.

I guess why wouldn't you go to a school where you have a higher percentage chance of actual playing your 4 years of college?

You cant be serious.

cgs - yep, a third Renfroe sister. Crazy isn't it?

hittinthefence0711 - to the credit of MANY athletes, they simply want to compete at the highest level possible. Their mind set is to compete within their team to earn playing time. That is an incredible attribute to have as an athlete, and a person. Sure it would be easy to go to a lessor program and be a stud. But competing against better competition is the way to test yourself. Simply look at tOSU football team. I bet 90% of the nonstarters could have been studs on other rosters. Even the new recruits that were just verballed for 2013 did so knowing they will compete against players already there that were HS studs as well. I am sure they didn't even consider going to a MAC school just so they had automatic playing time. Competition is a GOOD thing.
