2020 WK #1 Player of the Week (Caliyah Clapper)

index.php

Caliyah BIO

Caliyah Clapper is a 10 year old, 5th grader, at Mifflin Elementary, Mansfield, OH. She is a straight A student at this elementary school within the Madison Local School District. She placed 9th in the Richland County Spelling Bee last year. Caliyah also scored a perfect score on the state of Ohio 2019 Spring Math Test.

As we start into the 2020 season WIcked 09 is excited to have this returning #12 to the line up. Last season as a birth year of 2010 Caliyah could still play 8U but made a decision to challenge herself and play 10U. In her 1st year of 10U she led her team with 4 home runs and a 0.429 summer batting avg. She also stole the most bases, 45, and drove in the most runs, 27. Midway through 2019 Caliyah decided she wanted to try pitching. She pitched a total of 5 innings all summer for Wicked in 2019. That wasn't enough, so she hired a coach and started to learn.

Caliyah is now entering her 3rd season with Wicked ‘09 and now as an ace pitcher. In only a few months she has learned to perfect spot pitching, improve a change up, and sped up her fastball to 47+MPH. With this skill Caliyah led her team to a championship at Queen of the Turf USSSA National Qualifier January 4-5 in Mt Vernon. Caliyah pitched in 2 games on sunday bracket play, the quarter final and the championship game. In those 2 games she pitched 11 innings, faced 44 batters, striking out, 18 of them. She gave up 4 hits and maintained a 60% strike percentage. Those pitches helped her team defeat the undefeated #1 Seed Lighting Blue in an International Tie Breaker 3-2 for the quarter final game. Eventually the championship would go on to be played against Ohio Emeralds ‘09, whom we placed 2nd to the previous weekend and tied in pool play. Caliyah pitched a shutout game, striking out 13 of the 19 batters she faced, giving up only 1 hit to a well placed bunt. She also went deep hitting a home run for her offense to run rule the Emeralds 10-0 in 5 innings.

This fall/winter season Caliyah leads her team with a 0.425 batting avg. She also has the most RBI’s, singles, doubles, triples, and the only homerun for her team. When not in the circle Caliyah is a true infield utility player spending time at every infield position except catcher. She is a top player for Wicked on offense and defense.

2020 WK #6 Player of the Week (Abbey Wittman)

index.php

Abbey Wittman - Ohio Storm '08

Abbey Wittman is a 10-year old 5th grade student in the Fredericktown School District, where she is an A student. Abbey's love for softball and her team is like no other. Off the field, Abbey also enjoys bowling, riding her bike, Tik Toc, and Fortnite.

Abbey, aka Big Abbs, is an athletically gifted softball player, as is evident because she is only 10 playing on a 12U team. She is a utility player for the Storm '08. She can play any position on the field, and understands all aspects of the game. At the age of 8, when she should have been playing in her last year of 8U, she moved up to 10U, joined the Storm, and is now in her 3rd year as a member of team. She works hard, feeds off of the older players, and is a great teammate. She may be small but don't let that fool you, she is mighty. One memory that stands out was at 10U East Nationals in Tennessee last July. In a game against the Atlanta Vipers, Abbey was batting leadoff. When she came up to the plate, the Vipers coach told his outfielders to move in, and on the first pitch, she crushed a triple to the fence, over the right fielders head.

Abbey and her team just finished their winter indoor season at the Pavilion Sports & Events Complex. Playing in a 12U indoor tournament and the indoor winter league, Abbey had a great winter indoor season. In 25 plate appearances against 12 year old pitchers, she batted .421 had an on-base-percentage of .523, walked 6 times, and struck out only 1 time. She is a great asset to her teammates and the Storm '08.

index.php

Micayela is a 7th grader at Indian Valley Middle School. She is entering her second season with the Lady Rebels. Micayela is becoming a very accomplished player and leader. We ask a lot of her, but she always seems to rise to the occasion. I don't expect that will change at all this season. Defensively, Micayela will be our field general once again at shortstop. Offensively, she leads our team in Batting Average, On-base Plus Slugging Percentage, Hits, Extra Base Hits and Runs Scored. Her team has earned two 2nd place finishes and two 3rd place finishes in four of their last five tournaments.
In addition to travel softball, Micayela is a straight-A student, a member of the middle school choir and a member of the middle school track & field team. She was also the point guard and leading scorer for Indian Valley's 7th grade girls basketball team who became the first ever girls middle school team at Indian Valley to win their conference championship tournament. Her team finished the season with a conference record of 12-0 and an overall record of 14-4.
Last year as a 6th grader, Micayela became the first ever female football player to compete in the Indian Valley Youth Flag Football League. Maycee Martindill #24

Maycee is a 12 year old 7th grader at Fairfield Union Middle School. She is an A honor roll student who excels in both basketball and softball playing travel in both sports for several years. She recently moved to the Fairfield Union School District with her 4 brothers and sisters after having been an A student at Teays Valley.

She has been a member of Central Ohio Pride 07 for the last 6 years. She's as loyal and as happy a kid as you can find. She is always a very coachable kid who works very hard and works to make herself better, whether it is in the field or at the plate. This year she has been coming into her own at shortstop and center field.

At the plate she has been a monster all year batting .556, OBP of .673 and OPS of 1.451. She has 20 RBI and 20 runs scored in 3 tournaments, while drawing 12 walks so far on the season. She is usually one of the smaller kids on the field but also one of the fastest, toughest players we've had. In the field she has had a fielding percentage this year of .935 with only 2 errors while playing the majority of her time at shortstop.

Maycee recently suffered a season ending neck injury, but we look forward to having her back at some point this fall and she will always have a place on our team. Get well soon #24! We at TheSoftballZone wish her a quick recovery.
