I'm curious to know what everyone thinks should be a punishment for a player that has broken the OHSAA rules on this topic? I can only assume that a school would take some level of action. I believe they would have a right to discipline a player beyond the action taken by the OHSAA. Most schools have a Code of Conduct of some sorts but I haven't seen one in years to know if this kind of thing is addressed.

While I believe it should be handled on a case by case evaluation, I might agree to a suspension from participating in any athletic events for an entire school year. Why not! There's a lot more going on than the game and it may seem harsh but could be merited depending on the blatant nature of the infraction.

In a scenario where the dad was the coach for the travel or Rec team and a kid took on an assumed identity to play, I would definitely consider a full year suspension from all school sports-------not just softball. Somebody should learn a lesson from it...........

in a continuation on this forfeited games thread, Mercy McAuley was just forced to forfeit numerous games this spring. Due to ......surprise a selfish 9th grader playing with a 14u travel team during school season.

The depths of this selfishness boggle my mind. To play on a thrown together local team , some with fake names, in search for a what???, and risk everything for your HS team? ridiculous at best.

Said player appeared in 11 games, depending on exactly when she became ineligible due to playing with travel team, will determine number of losses McAuley has now acquired. and with 25 at bats and 1 hit it wasn't like she was setting world on fire.

It's kids like this that should NOT play HS ball!

Facts! I was told they have to forfeit 12 games which puts them at 0-17. Very sad for the seniors and again very selfish on the parent and player's part! and like you said not even a factor in any of the wins! I hope they got a nice shiny ring out of this!

doesn't matter to me. BUT rules are rules. OHSAA is very clear about this issue, and not a secret. Schools all tell and remind their players yearly. All legit travel coaches know.

But to plan a 'CIA' type mission to play and put yourself so far above your teammates and risk their entire season...for what? few extra reps? a $3 ring?

And just how stupid do you think people are? To play in a local event, 14U, in April. Take pictures and post to social media / internet after winning???? Seriously?? Magnifying glass is all over 14u aged players and this time of year.

And yet none of that really mattered. They still received a favorable ranking for postseason play, and won their matchup last night. So at the end of the day, what did it really cost them? A losing regular season record, but zero affect on the post season. Is that really a punishment? What effect does that really have on the team?

I am curious if the school took any action against the player involved in the infraction. Was she benched or suspended? Will she play at all in any upcoming games?

considering if she plays in any game this season, it is an immediate forfeit, i'd wager no. and batting a sweltering 1 for 25 before this fiasco exploded.

You are correct. I wrote before I thought it thru, or how I worded what I really wanted to ask. Sorry.

I'm just curious how the school will or any school would handle something of this nature. Would there be more beyond the obvious? If there's one thing I have observed over the years it's school protocols and policies can be confusing. It can mirror politics in general and be as deadly to discuss. lol

All HS programs have a Spring sports meeting and make it very clear NOT to participate with travel teams once the first scrimmage for HS.

to avoid any violation I have always released my Athletes to their School ball programs on or Before February 15th. As most HS tryouts are held that week.

This is selfish, careless, disrespect, and arrogant to play in a travel tournament during School ball season. Just to win a $12 Ring?! SMH.

That HS coach probably loves that Dad for the forfeit. SMH.

I was unaware that if a girl plays travel ball that the travel coach needs to release them to play high school ball? Does this seem backwards to anyone else?

You don’t need to release them. I guess I should of used my wording better.

What I meant to say is we hold our last practice as a travel team and see them off to their HS team. Then no contact till they are released by their HS program.

Is that better? Lol.

https://www.ohsaa.org/Eligibility/C...:text=4-5-5 Any student,not more than 10 days.

It honestly depends on the AD, the sport, the athlete and it does make a difference between male and female.

The link above is a short snap shot of infractions and discipline. Over the years boys sports tend to get more of a FREE pass than female athletes sports when it comes to disciplinary actions.

The school AD ultimately has the final say but in cases like this, a female freshman non starter/ non contributor on varsity will get the maximum as an example setter same with other sports.

You are correct about politics of the HS sports environment. In the big picture what the player did was light compares to some of the other stuff that gets swept under the rug or overblown with HS sports.

Many factors come in to play including boosters, players with parent coaching or teaching, history of the athlete etc. (Oh the stories over the years). Just this year I know of a player given 3 days OSS and 5 games suspension for a rule infraction in the school.
She was the star softball player and coaches daughter. They only had 3 games left in the season then playoffs. The coach scheduled 3 more contest to make sure the suspension was covered and so the player could play in the playoffs.

I remember my last year back in 2014 there were about 20 female HS players that was involved in a music video and was removed from ALL sports that made national news.
Most of the 30 or so boys on the other hand that were in the video were allowed to continue to play their sports. The male video organizers were expelled and a couple female and male student suspended. A law suit followed but the ladies sports suffered and honestly have never recovered since most were the top athletes not allowed to play in 2014.

I would guess since players dad is a travel coach and she plays a lot of JV he pretty much said big deal who cares, I want my $12 ring.

This is the problem with our world today. Everyone thinks their kid is a super star and they think they can do whatever they choose with no repercussions. If their daughter doesn’t start varsity they think it’s politics or whatever but they need to take a look in the mirror and they will see the issue. Work harder to start for Varsity. Parents keep your mouth shut and support the TEAM. It’s a Team sport.

I agree, this Athlete probably has no shot at playing for LW next year and as the coach for that HS I wouldn’t take the chance on her and her father. No way.

This athlete probably has no shot? How do you know? It's public school, she is able to try out no matter what. A 14 year old kid can't be labeled forever bc of Dads decision IMO. Admitting, what is out there to play in 16u and above during Hi school season?

This is America? Correct @shummel? So I do have Freedom of speech, and I am able to have my own opinion, correct? Just checking with you.....

IMO the Athlete has no shot with current Coaching Staff at that program. That is my opinion. You don't have to like it.

I respect your opinion. I just don't see where someone can say she has NO shot next year? But that's just my opinion. And yes, the kid in question I was referring to with Jeff was the West kid. A public school.
