I want to thank the work crews who did everything possible to get fields into playing condition. After the rain (cloud burst or whatever) on Friday, everyone thought I was nuts to say we would be playing at 8:00 AM on Saturday. The crew at Perry Fields and the City Crew that handled Riverside and Armco did an unbelievable job getting the fields ready. It only lasted 45 minutes and then came major storm number 2 of the weekend. First action, 3 hour delay (wanted to get teams that were in route stopped quickly); second action (after talking to field crew), cancel Saturday and do single elimination on Sunday (still hoping to get part of the tournament in); third and final action (after watching more rian, weatching the radar and talking to my wife), cancel. There have been four major downpours since that time and there is a 70% chance they will continue until about 10:00 AM on Sunday.

It is pouring again right now at my house while I am typing this.

Folks, I have been in Florida in a hurricane and Friday night caused several "flashbacks". I have not seen it rain that hard for that long since Hurricane Charley. I will admit that I would have bet my house against games being played at 8:00am, however, once I got to Armco fields at 8:00.. they were playing.

What happened after then was the knockout punch.. the skys opened up again and it started pouring...and pouring and pouring.

I think Rick made the right call several times....

1. The rainout games Friday night were cancelled and the schedule to be picked up as scheduled on Sat. morning. This was a smart move. Instead trying to redo the whole schedule and shortening the games to a ridiculous time limit.. He decided to take take a lump or two and carry on. I am sure if the tournament was completed, the "late Friday teams" would have received some refund. I think other TDs should follow this example.

2. I saw the extended radar and I knew very early Sat morning (4:00am - bad stomach ache) that, without a doubt, more extreme weather was coming. However, the fields were ready at 8 and Rick and his crew gave it the best chance of pulling this off. Mother nature just did not do JWM tournament any favors.

3. After the rain came and came this morning, instead of keeping teams hanging around to face an almost certain cancellation... he made the call early enough for teams to escape another night of hotel expenses and to head home. TDs... you should also take note that sometimes doing the right thing is tough but.... in end, it was the best thing to do.

If I ever say that I would like to be a TD of a tournament please confine me until the urge passes. Rick - you are a better man than I am in that you took the responsiblity for putting this together and... when faced with adversity..you manned up and did good.

If I am still coaching, I will be back next year to give the JWM tournament another go. They deserve that. Rick deserves that.

The parking fee thing definetely ****s. I would guess from the amount of cars in the lots quite a buck was made in parking for absolutely no entertainment except watching lightning strikes. I dont know if and how teams are to be refunded for not playing but i think teams that didnt get to play should be given full refund. The parking money should be more than enough to pay for what games the umps did and field maint. Just my opinion. Correct me if Im wrong. Dont mean to sound negative. I know everybody involved did their best to make this happen under impossible conditions. I also never in my life saw it rain and hail for that long of an extended period.

Great teams and players from what little we got to see . My umpiring partner (Becky ) and I only had 2 games on Friday before the skies emptied. The players, coaches, and fans we saw used very good sportsmanship and were well mannered . Saturday we only got a look at 2 more teams they was just the same . It is always so much more enjoyable to umpire a game when good sportsmanship like this is used . Hopefully we will all be able to have fun another weekend this summer .

Are you sure that lightning show wasn't worth the $$$$....LOL. I have never seen strikes quite like those, blinding.

That the same here woolfman. I hope the teams that didnt get a single game in get full refunds...not to mention gate fees were the same for siblings. I feel strongly against charging for under 12 or even under 10. That is a joke. Yes they worked hard and had the field playable...for 2 innings. Cant help mother nature but full refunds are in order for several teams...not credits.

Wow! We asked for a childs admission price (she's 9) and were told sorry no difference everyone is 10.00 for the whole weekend. Apparently things weren't relayed correctly. (That was at Riverside Fields Friday about 1/2 an hour before the heavens let loose.) It's only right to refund. They did the best they could under the circumstances now it is time to make it right for the teams.

I would like to simply post that I have no problem with the fact that mother nature intervened and there is not much anyone can do about it! I understand most posts concerning refunding and tend to agree! But I would like to state that my only concern is directed to player and fan safety issues. Upon arriving at the Armco fields I quickly realized there was a significant safety issue with the fields. There was absolutely no fencing to protect the players or fans on several on the fields and the other had minimal protection. To not provide fencing to at the very least protect the players is uncalled for!!! In my opinion these fields are un playable, certainly at this level of play! The Riverside fields were fine and I did not attend the others. I would also like to say thank you to the Holiday-Inn Express which went above and beyond it's duties to keep so many people happy under the circumstances relating to the weather, great job!

I was under the impression the entry fees for the teams were going to be refunded.

We heard several different things...ranging from no refunds, some refunds and also something about credit. Credit hopefully that is Not the only option. That would not benefit us at all. Even if our team came back next year they would lose a tournament this year with a refund we might be able to pick up another one this summer.

I have no influance in this, but this is just MO
Rick's been at this along time and I think he does a good job, and I'm sure he'll be fair but like everything else your not going to make everyone happy.
Total refund more than fair
Refund based on if you played any games, Fair
Credit to one of his other tournaments if you had the open date and it had an opening would be fair.
No refund not fair.
I hope everything works out for you.

To anyone that had to pay the gate fee for a child "I apologize." That is NOT our policy. The gate fee is supposed to be for adults only. No one 18 or under (player, sibling, boy friend, etc.) was supposed to be charged. There is a list of guidelines with each money box. I am sorry that one of our parents errored in charging for a child.

Agree, mostly.Don't like the credit for next year or future tourney aspect. Some teams may not be around again next season.I feel no need for this route.Huge, popular and well run tourney and teams will show every year without having to be forced to return or just lose thier money.

1-Lose deposit.Tourney did have to pay assumingly for fields, workers, food, field dry, umps, etc.?
2-Refund depending on games played-like a scrimmage and paying for facilities and umps.
3-A lot of parents are out hotel fees already
4-Parents may want refund from thier org for for no-games played
5-Cost of doing business?Keep people happy so they return?
6-Gate fees helped cover financial losses?

I'm running 2 tourneys and always looking for pro's and con's to the way TD's do it.

Coach Rick Sherman is a class act. I am sure he will do what is right.

He has been running tournaments for many years.

Rick was out most of the night between Friday and Saturday morning sweeping water so the games could be played on Saturday morning.

As we all know the rains came again Saturday morning and it was the right decision to cancel the tournament.
