First & foremost I want to thank Chris/Gregg & the SDS organization for putting on an event that was simply outstanding, from the free entry to the very reasonible prizes to the umpiring to the teams we played against. We couldn't have had a better time - well maybe Chris will learn how to spell "Cincy" or should I say Cinci on the t-shirts :). You still owe me a cheeseburger!!!

Finally I want to say congrats to my Cincy Static 12 Black team. They came to play the last 4 games scoring 60 runs & giving up 7. Hopefully this gets us ready for Panama next week.

Again thanks Chris & Gregg!!!!!!

I would also like to thank the SDS crew. It was well worth the trip from Columbus to play. Played some great teams, our games were exciting until the semis just ran into a buzzsaw the static hit the ball hard. We look forward to coming back and evan paying ths next time.
GREAT JOB SDS. Thanks from The Canal Winchester Lady Indians.

Calm down people...lol...

Hey, Fury, did the parent tell you he came over and apologised to me after the game?

Did the parent also tell you how we laughed and carried on the rest of Saturday and Sunday? I liked the guy actually.

But, I heard enough of his comments.... especially comments of him trying to call a safe or out from the third base side bleachers, behind metal fences when I am vry close to the play versus him.

But, Fury man, understand... if I thrown him out... you too are gone as a manager. That's the rule. Check the rule book. Managers are held responsible for their fans and will be. Same rule applied at the Gene Harvey Tournament.

One umpire, doing 16u, 14u etc.... at a free tournament. OBVIOUSLY, no team had ANY cost towards umpires. So, if you get in free and there is only one umpire so the internal costs don't get out of hand for the SDS organization... who gave away the free tournament out of kindness... then don't come to the park complaining about one umpire.

I can tell you from the umpire stand point.... it wasn't worth the pay by any means. I did it as a favor to the SDS people who I like very much. I worked hard for them and I am sure they know it. But, as for the safe or out call at first base... I'd call the same call all over again the same way as that is how I saw it. I just love it when the girls make the last "jump" towards first base and they are "hanging" in the air from their leap. Makes my job easier for sure.

But, as for your parent... hell, I thought I made a new best friend actually. All kidding aside. Loved talking to him the rest of the weekend when I had breaks. I like him actually... can't wait to see him this weekend at Pastime when I got more time to talk with him.

Semantics, much? ;) The point here is as an umpire, you NEVER let the fans get to you to the point where you resort to telling them to "shut up" and hurl threats at them. The ONLY option in this case is to inform the TD or UIC between innings that there may be a potential problem with a fan, and let THEM monitor the situation. An ump's job is to deal with the official participants of the game, and that includes players and coaches, not fans. Letting the ump know he made a bad call, without using profanity or personal insults, is as American as Apple pie. Stop being naive and pretending like you've never been to a game, and have never participated as a fan.

Fans are coach's responsibility. Plain and simple. So you are wrong in this statement. The so called "threat" was I told him he'd be watching the game from the parking lot... That isn't a threat... I guarentee that is a promise. You can't get the parent to leave.... your team forfeits.

Tim,

Yes, he did tell me he aplogized after the game. That's what a polite, mature adult should do. He also knew there was a good chance you'd be umping our future games there, and didn't want bad blood between you and our team. But understand, the main thrust of my post was not that you addressed a loud fan, it was HOW you approached the fan that left a bad taste in the mouths of many. If you handled the situation a bit more tactfully, you may have tried saying, "Sir, this is not an easy job, and your comments are becoming a distraction to the game. If you continue making my job more difficult, I will eject you from the game, which means your coach is gone, too." He would have understood that approach better than "Sit down and shut up, I'm getting tired of your ****!" :lmao: I'll give ya this, that was one of the funniest things I've ever seen a game official do in all my years of playing, coaching and spectating sports.

The fact that the event was free and that you were working alone out there should not preclude you from acting professionally. Unless your point was, "Ya get what you pay for." lol. Just one guy's opinion. All that being said, thank you helping SDS out, it was a great weekend for softball minus the rain.

Calm down people...lol...

Couldn't have said it better myself. How can anyone complain at a free tournament. Your expectations have to be much lower than if you are paying big money for tourneys like GAPSS or Stingrays. I expect A1 quality at those tournaments. Did you really expect two umps at a free tournament. Hey, enjoy the free ball, work on some stuff and have a good time. Don't expect a Mercedez for free.

Relax, man. I dig what you're saying, but my point is simply that just because the tourney was free doesn't mean we should expect umps to act less professional. That's all. We had a GREAT time there, and thought the umps did a great job for working a field alone. The head coach of a team we played stormed out of his dugout screaming and charging the ump every time he made a borderline call, and the ump simply faced him and said, "Hey, I call it like I see it, sir." THAT approach shut the coach down every time. If the ump ripped his mask off and charged back at the coach screaming, would that have diffused the situation? Nope.

What's wrong with me telling him I was tired of listening to him ? I was. I thought I gave him fair warning. If I would have thrown him out... It would have been a Kodak moment when I threw you out also... since you don't seem to think you are responsible for your fans.

He admitted to me he was wrong and being a jerk. I told him I really didn't want to throw him out and miss his dd's game. From that point on...... we had a great time when we had a chance to talk.

As for you saying he was trying to be nice to me because I might umpire "your" next game. I don't believe that for a minute.

I don't hold grudges. Useless to do so. I don't think he felt that way Fury. I just think it is you and your way of thinking about things and thinking someone is always out to get you.....lol

I personally could care less who wins a game or tournament..... the only thing I care about is doing the best I can, the girls having a good time and for all to arrive safely home after the tournament. All I care about. Nothing more.

At least we didn't have a single ump call the coaches together and tell them that HIS strikezone was from the knees to the waist like the previous week. ;&................... and we were paying for that one !

Thanks SDS for a great weekend !

But, there was one umpire in the 10U that told a coach that his catcher must remain centered on the plate or he wouldn't start play. He created his own catcher's box instead of strike zone... New one for me, never heard that before.

I would also like to chime in and congratulate SDS. It was a great tournament all around. The young lady that umpired the 14U games was very good and great with the girls. Kudos to Greg, Chris and the bevy of volunteers that helped out...

The Eclipse Fastpitch 16U team would also like to thank SDS for a great tournament. We are a young team and saw alot of great softball over the weekend. Our girls had fun and learned a lot this weekend. The tournament staff also did a great job dealing with the rain! They truly had the kids in mind when they planned this event.

Hey Fury...how's your noggin'? We were on the 16u diamond when that one jetted over the backstop and dinged you from behind...I think that was you anyway!!!

Echoing what everyone else is saying, the SDS guys pulled off a good one. Excellent job gentlemen!
