A good catcher will not frame every pitch...just, as Bretman mentioned, fringe pitches that could go either way. Framing pitches that aren't even close, costs her pitcher borderline strikes. Building a rapport with the umpire goes a long way. If she has a close pitch that is called a ball, she'll deliver the ball back to her pitcher immediately on the call and look back and said "outside, right?, yeh, I'm still working on her (the pitcher)". She almost always receives compliments from the plate umpire after games. She treats the umpire with respect and acknowledgement of the job they do, as she has done it herself. And it definitely doesn't hurt that the first thing she says to the umpire when she comes out to the field is to acknowledge to him/her, that her #1 priority is to not let anything hit him/her!!
