Our Westerville Ice team played the Chain Reaction squad in the winner's bracket Monday afternoon and lost 7-2. I have to say that both the girls and the coaches were a very classy outfit. Our pitcher took a line drive to the shin, and the Chain Reaction trainers were on the field patching her up before we could get our kits open.

It was a fun game, and a good team. Congrats to them.

Congratulations to all the teams at B States, especially the 14 Sapphires and Sundogs. Got to see both of them play at Uncle Stans last week and both are excellent teams.

Just for the record. The U13 OFC Heat Orange played in the U14 bracket and came in third. For a younger team our girls did very well.

Re: NSA

I was at the "B" States this weekend and saw quite a few teams play. I am very impressed with the Sapphire Organization. The 14U team looks to be one of the better teams around. I was looking at the brackets and seen that they won 8 consecutive games to get to the championship game. I was talking to a gentleman at the bar and he told me that they are a relatively young team. He also said that they played in a 16U tournament and finished in 3rd place and have beaten the Wolfpack team twice this season. Take nothing away from the Sundogs they have a solid team but I would like to see those two teams square off when they are fresh. Also the Slimans team was pretty solid as well.

One side note. The backstops on each field allowed for numerous foul balls to hit spectators. I think they should install extensions that overhang from the backstop. There were many people there this weekend and everyone was dodging foul balls.

I saw a couple of strange things this weekend at the "B" tournament.

1. A pitch bounced off of the plate, over the catcher, and lodges under the umps facemask against his throat.
There was a runner on first. The call.....

Stuck ball, runner gets second.

2. This is the best one. A Ohio Naturals coach calling pitches for the Tidal Waves 12. They had a new pitcher (surprise, surprise) The Tidal Waves coach said he just picked this girl up ;). He said that this girl wasn't playing anywhere (quick, get the boots on, its getting deep). Well give this young lady some good praise, she was throwing 50+ and lots of strikes. She is a keeper, I just wonder which team will be keeping her.

3. Softball World finally figured out how to work the water hoses-at 5pm on Monday. For a while, I thought that I was in the Dust Bowl era.

4. This is not strange, but outstanding. I saw girls from all of the teams giving it their all in the heat on Monday. They all get my praise.

Re: NSA

Shoeless,, ?Sundogs and Sapphires have squared off previously over the last 2 years and both have been Fresh...Sundogs took 2 games in 03 and Sapphires took 2 in Columbus at Stingrays Invtl in 05. ?I knew going into that championship game that Sapphires would have every reason for losing after playing all those games and that Sundogs would have no reason for not winning.. ?However,, Sundogs have quality pitching and good defense along with experienced coaches and that kept them in the winner's bracket. ?Once you drop to the Loser's bracket, a team knows they have a long road to hoe. ?In this format,, every game is important and there are no throw-aways. ?So enough of the violins, give credit where credit is due. ?Sundogs won the championship by the way they played their previous games by going 5-0. ?The 6th game may have been a formality(?) but both teams competed with class. ? ?As far as the remaining teams in the 14U, ?there were some promising younger teams.. ?Valley Sting was strong, North Coast Spirit (White)rallied on Monday ,Heat looked good..,Slimans battled all weekend. ?It is sad to see however that some coaches still believe that 1 stud pitcher and a few bats can compete as you get older.. ?That may have worked in 10 and 12U, but not against the big boys ( or girls). ? ? The facility known as Softball World, a legend in their own mind, continues to disappoint. ?Horrible fields, no true warm-up areas, and outrageous prices...need I say more? ? ?Congrats to all who played and special congrats to the winners of all age groups. ?Good Luck at your respective Nationals..

Play where you should play, not because you think you can win a tournament by dodging tougher teams. If your a true 11u team "B" is where you want to be. Don't take a 12 year old pitcher and beat 11u teams and talk how great things were. Play at a tougher level you will impress people who understand the game. Sometimes it is better to lose a tougher battle then say we took 1st or 2nd at a "B" level.

Re: NSA

strikeuout: So what you are saying is that just because your pitcher is 12 years old, you shoudln't be playing in "B", you should be going "A?" ?First of all, you can't look at only the pitcher - there are 9 girls on the field for a reason and even an awesome pitcher needs back-up from every player on the field. And what if your 12 year old pitcher just started taking pitching lessons and this is her first year playing travel ball? ?I can also tell you that you need to look at the composition of the team and their experience. In our case, we have 5 girls that have never played travel ball, 2 that played 1 year of 10u travel ball with this being their first year of 12u and only 3 that have played at the 12u age group. They are playing very well together and have won some tournaments, but they are playing at their level, despite your thinking that they are only trying to notch another win.
? If majority of the teams that went "B" should be going "A" (as is your opinion), then why does NSA even have an A and a B? Why not every team just go A?

softballmom3022 and strikeuout. You are both right, just looking at it from different viewpoints.

To me, the decision to go "A" or "B" is initially made at the beginning of the season. All of the coaches have a good idea of how their team will progress during the season. Some teams will adjust their goals based on aquiring or losing players.

What "strikeuout" is probably refering to is bringing in a ringer pitcher. Everyone knows (or should know) the eligibility issues and aquiring releases that are required for this. The real damage by this is that the girls get to see how much faith their coach has in thier abilities. The girls of that team will never learn anything from that coach because he has demonstrated that winning is more important than teaching and learning.
