ASA Tournament Ohio Stingrays College Exposure Showcase July 8-10, 2011

I understand that Rudy and the other coaches want teams from out of state. But I have heard alot of people on here complain about players going out of state to get better exposure. Couldnt Stingrays, Lasers, GAPSS, etc. help this along by promoting OHIO softball, and giving preference to OHIO teams or am I being too short sighted here. Does bringing in teams from PA, IN, that stinky place up North, etc. bring in more college coaches. All of these tournaments are College Exposure Tournaments, I just think they should help promote OHIO players. Daughter has played in all of these tournaments and was part of this great organization (Stingrays).

Just asking a question...

This would seem like a good idea for Ohio, but I have read on here the complaints about Ohio teams not getting in tournaments like Compuware, so if you want a top notch showcase like this one is you must take the best candidates that apply. The hard part is some of the teams have some turn over, so determining who has what before they really have done anything I'm sure is tough. You have to use coach reputation and past season performance (individuals and team) as a guideline. For instance if a top pitcher changes teams the new team now is more of a candidate. There is no perfect team list, even the NCAA basketball selection always has some worthy teams left out and that is after a whole season of results to measure with.

I agree to an extent, but when you hear people complaining on here about players leaving OHIO for teams from out of state, I just think the Ohio Softball Community should help promote OHIO kids, thats all. I believe alot of Good teams from Ohio are left out of these College Exposure events for teams from other states (they may or may not be better then).
Thats all I was saying.

wmorrison - I don't think people complain about kids or teams playing out of state in order to get increased exposure. I thought I heard others say here that those same kids could get the same looks if they played for Ohio based teams - thats all. That may or maynot be the case, in fact I don't think it is. When a kid plays for the Beverly Bandits, Shamrocks or the Gold Coast Hurricanes it opens up doors that aren't opened by playing on other teams. The same can be said for exposure tournaments. If a tournament limits itself to teams in Ohio they are only going to be able to attract coaches that are in that area. If an event like the Stingrays wants to attract coaches from new/different schools they need to have strong teams and they need to attract teams from other areas as well. Those kids from other areas will invite college coaches to come see them play. If the coaches do come to the tournament then they will also get to see some of those Ohio kids you want the tournament to promote. These coaches might not have come to Columbus if those other teams weren't playing. From what I saw this event has some pretty strong out of state teams playing. We see that here all the time. The big showcases down here always have the Cali/Tx/Ariz teams playing - when in fact many of the local teams are just as competitive as they are. But guess what - the college coaches are watching those teams play in droves. We had kids play on a team that played against the Batbusters in November and it was standing room only. They were good but our team tied them and our kids got a ton of looks from the coaches that were there to see the BB's. It is a strange circle for sure. The only way to appease everyone is to let everyone in and play single elimination...lol That would certainly make that 16 hour drive a little less appealling.

flarays is right, I have spoken to Rudy and I gave him a list of out of state schools where we had girls sign and a list of out of state schools that were actively recruiting players from our team. I have had a number of out of state coaches ask me about what players they should be looking for in the next few classes from Ohio. Coaches are starting to figure out that Ohio has a lot of talent. I believe it helps that we have some girls playing on out of state travel teams and the increased number of Ohio teams attending and competing well at ASA A Nationals. However, we should not be so naive to think we are so good that we should only have Ohio teams at Ohio exposeure tournaments though. If the OC Batbusters,NJ Intensity or someone of that caliber were to be playing here I would want my kids to play them for the exposure(you better believe they would be the biggest draw for all the college coaches). I think the Stingrays would lose credibility if it were all teams from Ohio. That would be what ASA States are for, which is also a big draw for coaches. If I was not sure I could get in every tournament I wanted for exposure I would for sure be at ASA States, they have to take you.

Glen and FlaRay,

I understand everything you are saying. But seems every year, more and more coaches /parents get on here after the selections and bang on the selections.

Like they say, cant make everyone happy

Again - I go WAY back. The first few years that the tournament turned teams away the selections got S L A M M E D here and on JJ. The last few years I thought it was pretty tame. That tells me Rudy and the folks in Stingray Blue are doing something right.

Parents and coaches, we all know how difficult and sometimes confusing the recruiting process can be. There often appears to be so many questions with very few answers. To help you through this process, the Ohio Stingrays have teamed up with the National Fastpitch Coaches Association to bring you a recruiting seminar at the Ohio Stingray?s tournament.

The NFCA?s senior director of events, Hildred Deese, will be giving a 45-minute informative talk about the recruiting process, with plenty of time to answer your individual questions. The seminar will occur twice this Friday July 8 - once at 10:30 am and then again at noon. Before joining the NFCA, Deese spent 17 years as a NCAA Division I head coach and is someone with extensive knowledge of what college coaches want to see and what athletes need to provide.

There is no pre-registration required and an abundance of topics will be discussed. Some of the areas that Deese will speak on are listed below, but please feel free to bring your own questions so that you can take full advantage of this great opportunity.

1. How do I work within the recruiting rules to help my daughter gain collegiate softball exposure?

2. When should I start focusing on the potential of an athletic scholarship? Is it too late to start now?

3. When should I send the softball video and the resume?

4. When can I receive calls and emails from college coaches?

5. When can I contact (face to face or by phone) college coaches?

6. What is a verbal commitment and how do they work?

7. When is the official scholarship-signing period for a softball athlete?

8. What are the softball governing bodies that create the softball rules for colleges and junior colleges across the country? How do they differ?

9. How many scholarships are available each year for junior colleges and for NCAA institutions? What is my competition for these scholarships?

10. What is an official and unofficial visit, when can they be taken and how many are allowed?

11. What are the pros and cons of using a recruiting service?

12. When should I take the ACT and/or SAT tests? What GPA do I need to be declared NCAA eligible to play as a college freshman?

13. What information should potential athletes send to college coaches?

14. Are scholarships guaranteed for a 4-year period? Can a scholarship be taken away after the completion of the first year in college?

Note: Athletes may attend, but may find that this seminar is more appropriate for parents/coaches.

Please visit the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) tent located between fields #3 & #4 on the north side of the concession stand at Fred Beekman Park this Friday. Meet with the NFCA folks individually or join them for the 10:30 am or noon seminar.

Hildred Deese is just the best. I've got a few questions I'm going to ask her and I know I'll get accurate responses.

Mark, I spoke with Hildred Deese and she does not have her presentation in hard copy form. She is giving the same presentation at the NFCA camp on Thursday. If you are attending the camp, you can hear the presentation there.

Musty, at that time of the day, OSU Beekman is going to be 40/45 minutes from the Pickerington site. As I said above, Hildred Deese is giving this same presentation at the NFCA Camp on Thursday. If your daughter is in the camp, you can catch the presentation at Berliner.

CGS - Can you get some notes for all of us?? We have a 12:30 game in P'ton. I sent it to all our parents if they want to attend, but coaches will have to be elsewhere.

I was informed by OSU this afternoon that parking at Fred Beekman Park and Coffey Road Park will be free this year. Please park in the lot on Carmack Road south of the playing fields at Beekman and in the lot on Coffey Road south of the playing fields there.
