Thanks Sideliner and FiremanTom!

Congrats back to the Buckeye Heat for winning in Whitehall.

And Fireman Tom, it was fun watching my "hometown" team do so well. Good luck the rest of the season!

And to the RRR directors and field crews - awesome job. Terrific tournament, well run, great fun. Thanks so much!

I agree that this is an awesome tournament. Fields that we played on this year were great, well-groomed, games stayed pretty much on time, overall very good group of umpires. I do have a couple of comments to share.

1. I wondered why they don't put batters boxes on the fields. Seemed odd.

2. I sincerely hope that there will be a policy in place next year to stop an unfortunate occurrence of this tournament. A team that would have been a very high seed made the decision to forfeit all pool games on Friday. This meant that three teams did not get to play as many pool games as they had scheduled. Teams and umpires showed up to each of these pool games only to find that the forfeiting team did not even have the common courtesy to call and say that they wouldn't be there. It also meant that in elimination play, the pool winner who expected to play a fourth seed from the previous day's pool play was forced to play a top team when they expected a true fourth seed. I believe that this decision was unethical. When you strategize as to how you will use your pitching and what it will take to reach the finals, you expect that others will be playing fairly also. I can only hope that this team went home early on Sunday and did not take the entire tournament. Allowing this type of unethical decision making to continue as a tournament strategy will only hurt the game and the folks who do play fairly.

Having said all of this, other teams from the same organization as the team that forfeited did not condone the action of this team either and I am glad for that. As a matter of fact, the other team that we played from this organization had class and played very well. This was nice to see.

Fastpitchfan232000,

FYI,

The tournament director was notified early in the week of the decision not to play the Friday games. I looked at the pool play sheet located between fields two and three at 6:00 PM Friday, all three games were clearly marked as forfeits.

We didn't have a 16U team there, but would like to know the results. ?We heard a rumor of a Pittsburgh team hitting 4 homeruns in a row at I470!! I think we heard the sound of the bats cracking all the way down in Moundsville! ? How deep was the field?
Also, who were the top teams and how many berths were there for the nationals?

Pittsburgh Predators hit 4 in a row against Explosion with the score tied at 0-0. They ended up winning 9-0. The fence was short (2 18u teams refused to play there because of it and they moved the game), it was rumored to be 180 ft.

I don't blame the team for not playing their pool play games. They were scheduled back-back-back for Friday night and would have had an 8:00 am start the next day. They would have gotten home at 1:00 am and would have had to be at the fields for warm-up at 7:00 am. It was a good decision on their part because they were playing for the the final game in the losers bracket when we left. The winner of that then had to play Mason Dixon Diamonds for the championship. I actually feel bad for the girls on the team because they had to miss 3 games due to a scheduling mishap that could have been avoided.

The 16U Valley Extreme-Bensing team went 7-2 losing to the Pittsburgh Lady Road Runners White in the Loser's Bracket championship game 4-0 (0-0 after four innings). ? ?Our third game of the day. ? ? The Road Runners then needed to beat the Mason Dixon Diamonds twice to win the tournament. ? ? The Valley Extreme's only other loss came at the hands of the Mason Dixon Diamonds on Saturday 4-2, after winning 2-1 through five innings. ? Both the Road Runners and the Mason Dixon Diamonds were two solid teams!

This was a great and FUN tournament, we'll most likely be back again next year!

Powermom,
There were 2 girls from our 12U Force team that hit homeruns on field 2 at I470 field. Even if it were only 180 feet, I believe that's pretty impressive for 12 year olds!

How about the 3 teams that lost a pool game because of this decision. ?Does anyone feel sorry for them?

When you are in a double elimination tournament with 16 teams, there is a potential of a team having to play 9 games during bracket play to win the championship. ?With playing the first round of the losers bracket twice to make sure everyone had their 6 games, that is a potential of 10 bracket games. ?Add the 3 pool games and you have 13 games to be played over 3 days. ?It IS an advantage if you get to the end of the tournament not to have played those 3 pool games.

I can't believe that anyone is endorsing the intentional forfeiting of pool games to give yourself a better chance to win the tournament. ?It affects more than just your team. ?Many teams use pool games to give players playing time that may not play as much in bracket play. ?Some teams have to travel (hotel costs, etc.) to the tournament and expect (weather permitting) to play games, not receive forfeits.

If this team felt that their schedule was too difficult to handle, they should have withdrawn from the tournament. ?I'm sure the tournament director would have been more than happy to refund their money. By the way, I agree that the pool schedule was not a good one for them and I wouldn't like it either. However, their solution affected other teams and basically made their problem someone else's.

I can only hope that this is not the beginning of a trend in this sport.

Fastpitchfan232000,

In answer to question number 1. The primary reason for no batters box is the time factor involved. I was very pleased that the fields were drug and lined as oftern as they were, but I did not believe we could afford the extra time necessary to put down the batter's box. With 222 games to be played, we were on a very tight schedule all three days.

Concerning point number 2. We will be looking into a policy to cover the situation in question. As already noted the team in question did notify me and we did have that information at the check in table and the first team they were to play had been notified the day before. I do not know why umpires showed up at the field as the UIC was aware in advance of the games being forfeits.
