Bottom line...till pen hits paper...it's all talk!!

I think that's why they call them verbals....
Which is what the 8th graders get....
Which just about everyone on OFC understands!
This NLI you seem to be so fixated on is nothing more than a guarantee that a player will receive a scholarship for their freshman year -- technically this is not even guaranteed. Schools can and do rescind or reduce some player's scholarship offers. You take the EXACT same risk by entering into a verbal agreement that you do in believing you will be getting that same scholarship your 2nd year in college. It is nearly the EXACT same circumstances that lead to a verbal not being honored as a scholarship not being picked up past the first year. Please continue to educate yourself on this if you are advising your parents on recruiting.... or just send them to Warren and Glen if they have questions.

Well, if you look at the Bandits Team DeMarini 14u which is an OHIO based travel softball team they list Madison Banks as a 2018 player (Pleasant Valley Middle School) as committed to University of Washington. Also, I believe Jena Lilley did as an 8th grader as well... but not positive on that.

Pretty sure Taryn Avello also committed to Washington before HS.

Why do you think is? Maybe because most girls.parents/coaches don't understand what it takes to get an early verbal. Maybe because of the lack of scheduling and leaving the state to face better competition. I'm not saying Ohio doesn't have tough tournaments, there's a couple very strong ones. But Ohio is full of mid-majors and a decent softball team (until OSU gets it back on track), and those mid-majors don't recruit until later thus missing on all of the early comittments. So if you want that early comittment, time to open the wallet some :D.

let me say it a little clearer I don't be leave there are any 2000 or 2001 birth year kids from Ohio right now that have or that are verbally committed....
Madison Banks as a 2018 player ...... if she is a Ohio kid I will stand corrected .......
but 1 kid from Ohio don't make a list ..... its not even a short list .......

Someone who coaches an 11u team is teaching a college softball coach how to do their job.

Also, Didn't you read his post? Warren doesn't do that sort of thing...

I think it was said earlier in this thread that unless your that 6ft 60 mph genetic D1 kid ...colleges are not looking at kids in middle school to offer money ...... I think that there are a lot of 2000 and 01 kids that are on some schools radars for the future but that's about as far as it goes ..... again just my opinion..... I think ohio has a lot of good teams that are going to the right places an playing at high levels more and more just since the last 5 years I have been involved with high level travel ..... every one keeps saying times are changing but I don't see it yet here in ohio ..... so I guess im one of the odd ones on ofc ......

An 11u coach who has an older daughter playing DI ball. Where does your daughter play again? Oh yeah. On a travel team. I think Tom has a lot more knowledge about this than you do. Are you just bitter because your kid hasn't gotten any college interest?

He knows someone who plays college softball? I am overwhelmed.

He is clearly an expert on recruiting and knows much more about recruiting college softball players than "ladyknights." "Ladyknights", afterall, is merely a college softball coach. What would he know?

My brother works on airplanes for a living. Want me to work on the next jet before your next flight? I also know a lawyer or 2 and a doctor. Anytime you need a check up or legal representation just hit me up.

His daughter. Not just someone, his daughter. He was with her through the recruiting process. And DII colleges, where Shayne coaches, generally aren't recruiting the young players.

Just because a very young player cannot be officially offered, don't think for one moment that they don't say "I can see us offering you xxx in the future, if you continue to compete at a high level." It's clearly an implied offer in order to secure that early verbal commitment.

This will be my last post in this thread and my last post all together on this particular topic.

To recap the thread, college coaches and scouts say things like "The article is BS", "We don't do this", "It doesn't happen", "If I did that I would get fired", etc, etc. Those who have something to gain by misleading the naive say things like "The article is legit", "Yes you do", "It happens all the time", "No you wouldn't", etc, etc.

Who is telling the truth? It seems like a no brainer to this guy.

I leave you with this:

atlanta legacy scouts.jpg

That is from the 14u Atlanta Legacy College Showcase. Notice that the ground is wet but no one is under the tent. There weren't even any scouts that wanted to get in out of the rain.

Oh, and cryslte, I don't think our team was playing in the game in that picture so I don't think the lack of college coaches at the backstop has anything to do with how bad my kid sucks.

Thanks for managing to not bring up her inadequacies and shortcomings in your follow up post. You make sure you stay classy, ok? ;)

I said nothing about your child's shortcomings or inadequacies. Nor did I say she sucks. Frankly, I have never seen her play. I just was speculating on why you are so bitter and seem to have an ax to grind. But it's cool. In a couple conversations with others, I figured it out. I certainly hope something good happens in your life soon.

We encountered many coaches this past summer. 16U, 2016, and 2017 grads. The mid level D1's were still recruiting 2016's and 2017's, with a few having an opening for "A" 2015 grad. Schools like Va. Tech and Oregon made it clear they were almost finished with their 2018's. When I put 2 and 2 together, I come to this conclusion. Bigger program = Earlier offer. This is just my opinion based from my observations.

Bingo! So if your kid wants to play at a big school, better get to a big name team with aggressive fall schedule - more and more offers being extended in the fall.

My DD is from Ohio and excepted a verbal the summer of going into 9th grade and we are from Ohio; But I feel in some cases I feel coaches/parents want to be chest thumpers because their player/kid is going to a D1 and in some of these case education isn't even mentioned. I feel who cares what school...division they go to as long as the education is a great fit ; then look at the team to see if they are too; they are not going to make 26 million dollars a year playing professional softball.

Bucketime ... as you can see, there is always a lot of debate around this subject ... anywhere ranging from should it be happening to whether if it really happens or not. I am pretty sure I know who your DD is and if I am not mistaken she is actually a college freshman now, correct? Are you willing to share any info about the process that your DD went through around this ... i.e., when or where your DD was seen, what the coach(es) said to her to get her to commit, what decision process your family went through before the DD verballed, etc.? Were you ever concerned that the verbal wouldn't be honored?

Yep. The fall schedule is as important as the summer season these days, if not more so.
