As a first year travel ball parent and a non baseball guy my eyebrows popped up when i heard some of the other softball dads throwing out some baseball/softball slang at a tourney. I humbly walked over the group of gentlemen hat in hand ,pride in the back of my throat and asked the question, What is a CAN OF CORN? After they poked a little fun picked themselves off the ground and wiped there eyes they began the course of Softball Slang 101..As i hung on to every word and filed the sayings away in the ole memory bank i knew then and there that i was below the curve on softball talk.
Taking what i had learned from my lesson i decided to apply it at my dds rec league game or as we like to say live practice,my dd gets up to bat in her stance as she wheels the bat around my wife looks to me and says she is due for a good shot ya know,as i agree she pops one up into left field ,fielder takes two steps to the right and gobbles it up,i drop my head as most of us dads do and grumble a few words under my breath, the litl old lady about 60yrs old next to me looks and says wow!! she really hit that one good. Now was my opportunity! As i looked up from the bill of my hat i dropped it...NA that was just an ole CAN OF CORN....As the old lady looked away in disbelief i observed my wife's neck about break from her eyes rolling so far in the back of her head..I knew then i had to find some more softball slang. Now i know dropping the slang terms on the elderly isn't the best practice but hey it was however my first time, sorry about the long story..it was pretty funny to me.
So I'm putting out the call.....lets hear from some of the softball slang experts out there.
CAN OF CORN=easy catch-able fly ball
TWO IN THE WAGON..ONE A DRAGGING=two outs one to go
