McPherson, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons split two games today at the McPherson College Tourney, winning a 13-12 slugfest over the Central Christian College Tigers before falling 6-4 to the Morningside College Mustangs.
The Falcons started off strong against the Tigers, getting a three-run homer from Carolyn Dallimore (FR/Patterson, Calif. ) in the first inning.
Leading 5-3, the Falcons appeared to break things open with a six-run fourth inning.
Gianna Tijerina (FR/Fort Lupton, Colo. ) had an RBI double in the inning, with Laila Spracklen (FR/San Diego, Calif. ) singling home two runs. Renee Downey (SR/Modesto, Calif.) and Makenna Mitchell (FR/Orange County, Calif. ) also had RBI singles for the Falcons.
The Falcons had to hang on late, as the Tigers plated two runs in each of the fifth and sixth frames before making things real interesting with a three-run seventh.
An RBI double by Nicole Herrera made it a one-run game, but Hali Walters (JR/Longmont, Colo.) induced a fly out to leave the tying run at second base.
A run-scoring single by Kat Davis (SO/Keller, Texas) and a sacrifice bunt by Hannah Lang (SO/Topeka, Kan. ) that scored Tatum Haney (FR/Derby, Kan. ) in the sixth proved to be valuable insurance runs for the Falcons.
Davis went a perfect 4-of-4 at the plate for Friends, while Dallimore had four hits in five at-bats along with three RBIs.
Herrera and Altavia Hall each had four hits for the Tigers.
Walters went the distance for the Falcons, striking out nine in seven innings.
In the second game of the day, the Falcons fell behind 6-1 to Morningside, but charged back behind RBI singles by Davis and Lang that fueled a three-run seventh inning.
With the tying runs on, Lisa Bolton got a strikeout to end the rally and pick up the save.
The Falcons (6-14) outhit the Mustangs 11-6 behind two hits apiece from Davis, Lang, Mitchell, Spracklen and Tijerina.
Cortney Joiner went 2-of-3 for the Mustangs.
The Falcons are next scheduled to play at Avila University next Monday (Mar. 16) in Kansas City, Mo.
