WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons split a pair of games with the Mount Marty College Lancers in their 2020 home opener today (Feb. 17) at the Two Rivers Youth Complex. The Falcons took the opening game 3-2 but the Lancers rebounded to win the second tilt 8-4 to gain the split.

First Game

After leaving 11 runners stranded through the first five innings of the opening game, the Falcons were victorious when Kaylen Lassley (JR/Salina, Kan. ) doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and pinch-runner Tatum Haney (FR/Derby, Kan. ) scored the game-winning run on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Laila Spracklen (FR/San Diego, Calif. ).

Friends had battled back to tie the score as Carolyn Dallimore (FR/Patterson, Calif. ) produced a two-out, two-run double that chased home Gianna Tijerina (FR/Fort Lupton, Colo. ) and Kat Davis (SO/Keller, Texas) in the bottom of the sixth.

Making her first home start of the season, All-KCAC pitcher Hali Walters (JR/Longmont, Colo.) danced out of trouble and surrendered only two unearned runs in the sixth inning. She struck out six and allowed just two walks and four hits in the complete game win.

Facing runners at second and third in the fifth, Walters got a strikeout swinging to end the threat and keep the game scoreless.

Renee Downey (SR/Modesto, Calif.) went 3-of-4 at the plate for the Falcons in the first game and Lassley had two hits.

Jill Orwig also turned in a solid outing for the Lancers, giving up no runs over her 5 1/3 innings.

Second Game

The nightcap saw the Falcons carry a 4-2 lead into the fifth inning before the Lancers exploded for six runs. A single and an error was followed by a go-ahead three-run homer by Grace Helyer. An RBI double by Kelly Amezcua and sacrifice fly from Tara Oren helped the Lancers add three more in the inning for a four-run edge.

Kylee Brulotte started for Mount Marty and went five innings and gave up two runs to get the win. Maureena Vornhagen then shut out the Falcons over the final two frames to close it out.

Just like the first game, the Falcons found themselves down 2-0 but battled back with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the second to tie the score.

Downey then doubled home Lassley in the bottom of the third to put the Falcons on top and Savannah Jackson (SO/Ramona, Calif. ) drove home Makenna Mitchell (FR/Orange County, Calif. ) in the fourth with a sacrifice fly.

Lassley and Downey continued their hot hitting with two more hits in the second game, while Tijerina also had a pair of hits for the Falcons (2-4).

Michelle Kroell (FR/Clovis, Calif. ) went four innings in the nightcap for the Falcons and gave up five earned runs. Spracklen then turned in a solid outing in relief, blanking the Lancers with five strikeouts in her two innings of work.

The Falcons will next compete in the Evangel Queen City Bash this weekend (Feb. 21-22) in Springfield, Mo.
