The simple reason Cali teams are better then Ohio

I agree with you, a kid can play more than one sport in high school. They normally do need to decide which sport is the sport they intend to play in college. A lot of this decision to play a couple sports depends on the athletic ability of each kid. Some kids will only reach their potential on their main sport if they put all the effort aimed at that sport. Some athletes can easily add the second sport with out much sacrifice to their main sport. This was a conversation here a few weeks ago. I told them to go look at UCLA`s bio`s of their players. Over half the team played and many excelled at a second sport.

Back in Jenny Finch days, the ELITE training was not like today in many of the sports, nor where the commitment exectations by there schools and travel orgs. The decisions kids make today, is WHICH 1 Sport in HS can and will I maintain ELITE Training for. As for mine, there is no way to put 3 hours a day in the pool and then another 1-2 in for FP and satisfy Honors requirements for 4.0.

So, to think kids can TRAIN ELITE in more then one sport, I say your fooling yourself. Sure, play more then one sport, but there is only time for training 1 sport if your kid is going to get good grades too.

I will agree with you to a point ;)
There are kids who can do both. Most of them are great athletes.
I do not think anyone would argue that UCLA is an elite college team whos kids have experienced elite training. Over half their roster is made up of kids who not only played a second sport in high school, but excelled. Here is their roster, take a look.

Even at Ohio St, over half their roster played two sports. Everything from water polo, basketball, volleyball, track and field hockey. One Cali kid was even the lead female role in three different school plays.

So it CAN be done, but it is not for everyone and normally to excell at the elite level, it takes a great athlete to to do both.
Ohio States own All Big Ten selection Dee Dee Hilman scored over 1000 points in her high school basketball career. She is a great "elite" athlete.

Makes sense and agree also, but Swimming and FastPitch might be the TWO MOST TECHNICAL sports there are to try and combine. I played three sports to elite levels, but only TRAINED ELITE for one of them, the others just fell into place from athletecism.

You can't take days off as a swimmer or hitter/pitcher and continue to grow. However, football and basketball I could drop the ball for months and pick-up where I left off with a 2-3 day break in period. Quite Different then Swimming & Fastpitch.

Can anyone tell me why the hot bed of softball is out west and in the south, but all the professional teams are from our chilly neck of the woods in Akron, Tennessee, Chicago and the USSSA Pride team??

Wouldn't it seam logical that a league would have a better chance in these warmer areas where there seams to be more people. Don't get me wrong I love the fact that the Racers are in my own back yard, but it does make you wonder....

To me this is a no brainer. When you still have Ohio Colleges teaching squish the bug, Hitting off of balance beams , hitting punching bags. I could go on, but I attended one of these this weekend and you wonder why our kids are behind. Watch a 10 year old hit a punching bag and almost fall over do to the recoil and you think they are teaching this? I was just hoping they didn't injure the wrist.

I saw another team practicing this weekend hitting a mat up against the wall. I about fell over. These were 14U girls. I was shaking my head at what it was doing to their shoulders, elbows and wrists. Stopping their swing with such force. How anyone thinks that is a good thing is beyond me.

Why are Cali teams better than Ohio teams???

Well, I read allot of the posts and tend to agree with most.

But I have to laugh. You want to talk about dedication? Check out the video on the web site below:

It wasn't enough to have a Saturday indoor practice, followed by hitting instruction from Bill Lilly. The girls wanted to shag flies in a foot of snow! Then a simple 5 hr Sunday practice to end the weekend.

I had to laugh, thinking "wonder how many Cali teams are practicing in a foot of snow"!

That's the one thing I have to respect about the Lasers Red. There are no excuses. They show that it can be done.

My 10U is with the Ohio Power and we had to drive in a couple snow storms to get to practice a couple of times. They didn't cancel either. We loved it.
