Did you say that Tigerlillies didn't make calls to let players known if they made it or not ?

Parents take the time to bring their dd to a try-out; the coach/organization should give the courtesy of a phone call to notify a girl whether she made the team or not. Very bad manners displayed by some teams.

MV Express: organized but should be up-front about how many spots open--did get a call
Vipers: not impressed at all with the tryout, we took the time to come more than once, no call
Diamond Dominators: totally unorganized try-out; the players weren't even trying to catch balls, girls mouthy with the coach, did not bring daughter back for another day; if that is what returning players act like at a try-out, I don't want to see what they do at real practice or in games--NOT IMPRESSED.
Storm: organized, fun try out, did get a call
Cincy Doom: looked like a full roster when we arrived, no call back

I also think that girls who played on the team the year before should not show up for a try out in their uniform. The playing field should at least appear to be even.
Pitching machines are a MUST; it evens the chances of getting a decent pitch to hit
Coaches should speak with each girl at the tryout and find out where she likes to play
Teams should have printed materials when you arrive complete with costs, travel schedule practice times

I don't know how some teams are able to get new players when they are not up front with people who take the time to show up and spend several hours and a couple of weekends trying out for them.
AT LEAST CALL A KID AND BE BRAVE ENOUGH TO SAY SHE DIDN'T MAKE THE TEAM.

My dd will be playing for one of the above teams and we are thrilled to be part of the organization

It would be great if the player and family were told within 48 hours of tryout if they were chosen or not, and same goes with a player / family telling a team that they want the spot once offered.

A coach that says "I'll call you tomorrow" leaves the family waiting. If tomorrow comes but the call doesn't, should the player automatically think they were not chosen?

Is this type of practice acceptable?

Went to a tryout, was told the coach wasn't chosen yet, but one would be soon. Then a week later, the coach was chosen and now you had to re-tryout. It was a week later. then at the 2nd tryout, was told that calls would be made the following Friday. On Saturday, no call come.

Looking at almost 3 weeks to find out if you made the team that you wanted to play for and never get that promised call.

I don't think all the hitting should be done with live pitching, but each girl taking a few pitches, would be good.

Also, one team we tried out for took polaroids of each girl with her tryout # in the photo. This had to be a big help to coaches as they looked over their notes and tried to make decisions. Great idea!

Ok for those upset over no phone call. Were you promised a call to everyone whether you made it or not or just a phone call by such and such day if you are offered a spot. I have seen that at most of the tryouts we attended last year. Told that if you don't hear from us by blah, blah date then you are not being offered a spot. I do not really like that approach but that is how a lot of organizations handle it.

WOW, I CAN THINK OF 20 OTHER GIRLS THAT ARE PLEASED AS PUNCH ABOUT HOW TRYOUTS WENT.

? ?AND YOU DID COME TO TWO DAYS OF TRYOUTS. YES WE DID HAVE TO USE LIVE PITCHING ON THE LAST DAY, BECAUSE THE ELECTRICITY WAS OUT AT THE BALL PARK. SO THINGS WERE A LITTLE BIT SLOWER. BUT, WE DELT WITH IT AND GOT THROUGH IT.

?I'M SORRY THINGS DID NOT WORK OUT AND I'M GLAD YOUR DAUGHTER FOUND A TEAM, WE WISH YOU LUCK NEXT SEASON.

Scott, unless you were intending your post as shouting, the all-caps is very hard to read. Not trying to insult you or anything like that, just making a suggestion.

Just wondering how many of the above posters who have said their DD made a team had travel ball experience vs ?how many made the team without travel experience!

And I agree that girls who have made the team shouldn't be at the try out wasting everyone?s time. ?At all the tryouts we went to, you could tell if a girl made the team before showing up and ?still the coach let them hit, pitch and or field. ?Nothing more disappointing to the parent when the team said, "all positions open? you see 6 to 8 girls in uniform or asking dad to let them hit again knowing your DD doesn't stand a chance.

The DD who were no picked should get together to form a team just to go around beating all these select teams >:(

Prior to our tryout, I posted exactly how many spots were open (three) and which positions we were seeking (Pitcher, catcher, utility). It was advertised on OFC and the Huddle so those who came to the tryouts knew this before hand and we still had an excellent turnout.

I had my returning players at the tryouts in uniform, as well as their parents, to help and to meet the girls/parents that attended the tryouts. I felt it would be good for the participants and parents to meet the team and see them in action. I also felt it was important for the attending parents to meet my parents and talk with them about their experience last season and to answer any questions they may have for them. The purpose of all this was to help them decide if this was the team (and coaches) that they wanted to play for next year. I think this worked very well.

My goal was to be upfront about the team's needs and to maximize their exposure to the team to help them make an informed decision. It helped us find very talented and very nice players that are a great fit with the team and hopefully the team will be a great fit for them also.

Every team in our organization posted their exact needs prior to the tyouts. The organization's president, as well as all of the coaches, feel that this was the best approach for us.

If more teams (org.) were like Johnnies, then there would be more happy DD's and parents but a lot less action on OFC. ?Johnnies your method should be the standard and I am now asking all ?teams to follow. ?:-/

Johnnies-that sounds like a great way to run things! All should be that way. It wouldn't matter to me how many girls were coming back as long as a position that my dd can play was available then we would still show up. Heck my dd's 2007 team didn't offer her a spot until we showed up at tryouts. Then it was just kind of inferred that she would have a spot.

bohica-Last year we were 1st year and we not offered any spots. DD did get picked up on a team that lost a player in the fall. So if you have a daughter who has never played before and didn't find a team yet don't give up so easily. We kind of fell into an opening and it worked out great for us. Especially 12U it seems that 12U is always looking for girls. Post age, area, and position on player looking for a team and see who responds.

No matter what any organization does or doesn't do there will always be sour grapes when someone does not make a team perhaps they wanted to play for...unfortunately only 11 or 12 girls are selected and someone always has hurt feelings......some of our previous year girls were cut this year because it was determined a few new girls would be better suited for the team....obviously they had hurt feelings and the new girls were elated....no sense in trashing all the other organizations one tried out for......just be happy there was a good fit for your daughter somewhere else! In our case we had both live and machine pitching....we did tell everyone that we would call if they made the team....and 59 other families thought the Viper tryouts were well organized....only one with a bad comment ......99% satisfaction....not too bad :)

My 14U daughter did not make the cut but we still liked the try-outs and the coaches running things. We certainly appreciated Gannon calling to let us know that she did not make the team. The Vipers are simply a class act...whether my daughter was good enough to play for them or not.

We used pitching machines too, for ability to make contact; With all the girls we had attend, live pitching was impractical.

While the girls were warming up we met with all the parents and handed out our budget and expectations for the summer. We weren't able to give a travel schedule since most of the tournaments aren't listed for 2008, yet.

EVERY girl that came to our try-out received a thank you card for attending and was contacted by one of our coaches telling them they did or did not make the team. Coming to a try-out showcasing your year of hardwork in a couple hours is nerve-wracking, every girl deserves a personal call or note, thanking them. Period.

I'm curious as to how many girls each team had to replace, or decided to add. ?I had everyone return on my team (10), but this is not the norm.

Lady Knights on our team, 16U, we are returning 5 players. We had 5 ladies move up to the next age group. One of the younger ones went looking for greener pastures I guess. The other one I didn't see at tryouts? :-? Not sure what went on there.
