WCWS Schedule Update

The catcher stepping out of the box before the pitch was released just now was something we almost had earlier this year with one of our catchers. If you don't practice everything, you won't get it right. Even if you do practice it doesn't guarantee anything.
The rules only require the catcher to be in their box - which is huge in softball - they don't have to be behind the plate. Why are they starting behind the plate and moving out to catch the pitch instead of just setting up outside behind the opposite batter's box? WA didn't step out of the box, but their catcher was positioned behind the plate with her right hand stretched out for a target. Seems like they are making it more difficult on themselves.

Good point. Our catchers start out at the edge of the catcher's box, which is behind the other batter's box. Shouldn't be any need to step out of the catcher's box at all unless the pitch misses, but even then you wouldn't step out until the ball is released.

Don't agree. The rule was changed to specifically address this. It has been posted in the past - I will look it up later. The new rule specifically states that a fielder may not "inhibit in any way an offensive players ability to advance unless the defensive player in is POSSESSION of the ball". It was changed about 3 years ago to address the blocking of the bases - which is the cause of many, many injuries.

FWIW, I thought the runner was tagged before she reached the bag due to being blocked and it wasn't obstruction under NCAA rules because the fielder was receiving a thrown ball.

True for most rule sets, but NCAA rules weren't changed. From 2012 and 2013 NCAA SOFTBALL RULES AND INTERPRETATIONS:

9.4.2.1 A fielder who is not in possession of the ball, not in the act of fielding a batted ball or not about to receive a thrown or pitched ball, shall not impede the batter, batter-runner or base runner.

Here I was thinking these two teams had some great pitching. Norte Dame uses worth 454.

I haven't been home to pull it up - so you are saying that the ASA, etc and HS rules differ form the NCAA interpretation? I thought this change was filtered down from the NCAA......

Ellen Renfroe taking grounders between inning to avoid errors, not enough she has thrown 130+ pitches. Dedication is amazing, mental toughness.

Oklahoma will win tonight without much drama. The Vols deserve to lose pitching to Lauren Chamberlain in the 11th inning. The catcher was standing before that at-bat looking at Karen thinking we are walking her and then they pitch to her. What the hell was Karen thinking.......JMO

I agree, why pitch to her with first base open anyway........not a good coaching decision. But then again, now its first and second and you are facing 2,3 and 4 hitters. Hard choice, but I take my chances with Chamberlin on 1st.

The game was lost by the error.

Hard to believe that it happened. But I was thinking that the main baseball we watch is by 28+ year old men who have played 8 more years at least. Makes a huge difference in learning how to play a ball like that. These players in the baseball context are still learning in many ways. How many towering pop ups on a windy day have they seen in a stadium?

The game was lost when the ball Chamberlin hit over the fence landed. The error was a big momentum shift for Oklahoma.
