And this is why it should be a fall sport.......... Spring in Ohio sxxxxx

Unfortunately, weather in the fall is equally as tough. Although most teams are eliminated, going off of our schedule...our games end after 6 weeks on competition. Then we have 4 weeks of thinning the heard for the championship. If we base this off our our start of the school calendar for us; we'll start approximately on August 24th with the regular season ending on first week of October. The championship game will be played around the first weekend in November. Also seeing that October also has the greatest degree temps range of any other month dropping from a nice 60 degrees to around 40 by the end of the month. Plus, this (just like March/April), tends to be rainy.

So what is you propse to begin the season sooner. THen you're asking for the tryout season for travel to start sooner because I'm sure OHSAA will have the mobnth of August booked. And for those who are at nationals, those girls are now stuck eithe playing for a national championshop or being forced by OHSAA to play for their respective teams. As much as it pains me, but the way OHSAA hurts our girls, I'd rather take the rainouts and attemot to get them postponed while keeping it in the spring.

On the high school level, it's surprising most Athletic Directors don't schedule twice as many games so the opportunity for a full season can happen. It's mind boggling that teams can't make a phone call and get the games scheduled on a sunny and dry day verse the rainy ones. Truth of the matter though, unless your school is primarily a softball school, girls sports Always lose out to boys.

One of the arguments against softball in the fall has always been that the state tournament would be at risk. I know HS tournaments are always at the end of seasons, but is there any reason why the tournament couldn't start earlier, before the regular season is completed? There are already schools out there scheduling games and especially make up conference games in mid to late May after the state tournament begins. Why couldn't the state tournament start in say mid-September and finish up by mid-October? By the first of October, you would probably be down to the sweet 16 in each division meaning that probably 90% of the teams would be eliminated so there'd be a minimal amount of scheduling conflicts with teams still playing in both. Just a thought ...

One risk you run into if moved to fall is the fall showcases.

Also, if they did schedule the state tournament as you suggested coachjwb; you run the risk of girls not wanting to compete once eliminated and start focusing on b-ball instead of playing any more games. The only way this could work in the fall is if OHSAA stops regulating the girls competing on their respective travel teams.

So fall showcases become Spring Showcases, no big deal there in my mind.....showcases are two things.... One a showcase obviously, second a fund raising mechanism. You can't say that wouldn't be the same in the Spring.

Hilliard ... theoretically that's true, but a lot of the showcases teams go to are in other states, so I think the point brownsfan makes is a good one. Unless other states also went to fall, Ohio couldn't just do it itself ... not that it would ...

Spring showcases won't work because the College Coaches are in season and can't come.
You may have players but no College Coaches.

They now need boats in order to play. I know anything south of Anything south of I-90 (roughly) has had chances to play all week. Anyone north of I-90 played this week? Don't know why we couldn't play yesterday, maybe outfield is a swamp.
