So I came across a article that Florida is considering giving high school players a fifth year of eligibility for students that were impacted by the coronavirus. Georgia already announced its campuses are closed for the rest of the school year and they would not grant students a fifth year of eligibility due to the coronavirus. What’s interesting about this Florida situation is that the high school athletic directors are not in favor but over half of the softball coaches surveyed are in favor of giving seniors the option to come back for a fifth year. The whole discussion started in Florida when Governor Ron DeSantis announce during a news conference that students will be allowed to repeat their current grade level in 2020 and 21.

Since then FHSAA executive director George Tomyn said his staff will follow the lead of DeSantis and Florida department of education.

Just my opinion; there's no winner here. If you open things for 5th year seniors, this could impact the freshmen thru junior classes-----plus the 4th year senior class. Let history make it's mark and go on with life instead of trying to rewrite things.

This would actually allow more of the freshmen, sophmore, Juniors to stay in school an extra year. The Governor announced that any child could repeat the same school year again next year. So all the stud football or basketball players in Junior high could actually wait another year to start high school. The top athletes may not chose to do so. But the parents who's kids could benefit from puberty hold them back, so they have a better chance of competing and getting possible scholarships!
This is a crazy time and it is sad what is going on for everyone in the country. But staying in high school an extra year seems crazy. People have to move on. We all see the movies and would all think it would be great to be able to go back to high school for a year. But in reality, not so wise for majority!
There are students out there that will possibly need to repeat the same grade because they are not ready to move on academically. Do it for that and not Athletics!
