believe there was a note sent to all coaches, from OHSAA, dated 22 Feb 2019, that clearly states if scrimmage for 1, can't be a regular game for other. Also, clarified out of state travel, adjoining states, versus farther, etc.

SO, if Ashland was declaring it a scrimmage, and they would have had to if it was prior to 23 March, then the other team was not allowed to consider as a regular game. Hence, the violation.

Tough break for the girls.

Agree with others in that coaches/schools (where was the AD in this situation?) need to follow the rules ... and the first part of following rules is knowing the rules.
We questioned the coach before we went, she guaranteed they were scrimmages and everything was run though the AD.
When we had a parent meeting to be told our girls were disqualified the AD and coach were not at the meeting. The newly appointed principal had to break the news and answer questions that he had no answers for.

I would not be happy having it play out like this.

From the article it sounds like OHSAA made the determination that it was a "game" because there was an admission fee charged and they crowned a champion(s) for the event. The other team and/or even the tournament could have lead you/your coach/AD to believe that these were "scrimmages". Some things for other schools to watch/beware of is the type of event they go to if they want these to be counted as scrimmages.

There was another OH team at this tournament. But they didn't play before the official start date. Looks like the tournament scheduling did Ashland in.
(it may have then played into a violation of 27 regular season games scheduled/played - but I doubt if very many schools even have gotten close to the 27 regular season games this season. However it may have been in violation of initially only scheduling 27 regular season games. Not sure what the penalties are for this though.)

Maybe why all the Wendy Spring Classic games got cancelled - wasn't really the weather (complete sarcasm here :) - although I was a bit upset being charged for a hotel room that weekend).
