Lindsborg, Kan. – The (RV) Bethany College Swedes took control early and never looked back in winning 63-40 over the Friends University Falcons in the KCAC Postseason Tournament quarterfinals tonight (Feb. 26) in Lindsborg, Kan.
The Falcons got off to a sluggish start offensively that allowed the Swedes to jump out to a commanding 17-4 lead after one quarter that they quickly built to 16 on a three by Lauren Welsch.
Following four straight points by Naria Hall (SR/Wichita, Kan. ) that helped the Falcons shave the deficit to 11, the Swedes responded with a 12-2 spurt to build the lead up to 21 at 32-11 with 2:48 left in the opening half.
The Swedes led 34-15 at the break and got a three by Welsch and three-point play by Sitori Carver to stretch the lead up to 40-17 three minutes into the second half.
Friends would make a push, as threes by Patriece Dodson (SR/Wichita, Kan. ) and Gracie Sammons (FR/Aubrey, Texas) keyed a 12-3 run that cut the Bethany lead to 43-29 at the 2:36 mark of the third period.
But that's as close as the Falcons could climb the rest of the way, with the Swedes slamming the door by using a 9-1 spurt down the stretch in the fourth quarter to equal their game-high lead of 23 with just 1:05 left.
Dodson led the Falcons with 10 points, with Hall and Khadijah Kelly (JR/Arlington, Texas) each pulling down a team-best six rebounds.
Carver paced the Swedes (21-9) with 15 points and seven boards, while Autumn Garrett and Julia Nyguard each scored 11 for Bethany, who advances to the KCAC semifinals to play at second-seeded Sterling College Saturday afternoon (Feb. 29) at 2 pm.
Under first-year head coach Dean Jaderston, the Falcons wound up 12-12 in the KCAC and finished the season with a 15-16 overall mark.
