Joys of HS ball!Be ready to fill in the assumed practice days for re-scheduled games missed. For those with high$ pay-per-play,at least they make an attempt to get our money's worth by getting all the games in instead of just writing it off.

Thank you Freshman parent for understanding, welcome to High School ball, It's going to be a wild ride..........:D :lmao:

I hate missing a game too -- I'm moving heaven and earth and calling in all kinds of favors to get to as many games as I can this season. I'm pretty fortunate that I probably could manage to get to a game at the last minute, but I certainly understand why you are frustrated to be missing it.

That stinks ... would be different if it was a make-up game. For the one poster who was frustrated about impact on DD's work schedule, just know that there is almost no way a kid can play high school sports and hold down a job at the same time unless they have a very understanding boss (e.g., family business) or a coach who will let them miss some last minute scheduled practices and games.

I understand the frustration. We've all gone through it. There has been a couple of time where Louuuuuise would call me at 2:30 on game day and say that they changed the game from Home to Away (25 miles) because the other team's field were in better shape. Try re-arranging those travel plans with an hour notice. Now; leave work early - run home - let the dog out...

As everybody has said so far, What can you do about it? Make the best of it, and hope that the umpire shows up late so you don't miss much of the game.

Hey Dan, let us know if this game got played today.

Hang in there buddy. I know how anxious parents of freshman can be. Don't worry about your DD. She'll do fine.

A quick story about my DD and her first Varsity game. The first game of the year, DD is starting at 1b. We are home team and the first batter for the opposition hits a grounder to the 2nd baseman. 2nd baseman gets a clean field and from 20 feet away from 1b, underhand tosses the ball to my DD, who promply catches it and then drops it. I was scorekeeping and the coach looks at me like WT heck.

When inning is over, DD gets into the dugout and tells the coach that "she just wanted to get that first error thing over with and to let him (the coach) get his first official butt-chewing of the season out of the way". I just about fell off of my bucket. She still started every game that year at 1b and that ended up being her only error of the season.

Getting two schools/teams to agree on playing and modifying their schedules is very involved. Although a parent missing the opener is unfortunate it has no bearing on the game and can't enter into the decision mix.

If you can make it great but if not; don't beat up the coach. He is desperately trying to get the games in. He found an opportunity to get-it-done and moved on it.

players don't need mommies and daddies to be present to play. I got that about 6 years ago. it's her and 4 other freshman's 1st HS game, parents should have a chance to be there. what I don't get from some people is the mentality of "it's HS ball no matter what height of stupidy is reached, just take it, it's all good" . have fun , enjoy it. I'm not wired that way. appreciate the opinions, keepem coming. MD

I have come to believe all Spring softball is chaos.

The weather is just brutal so I just try to roll with the punches.

Changes on such short notice are tough, specially if parents are the transportation.

However, parents don't need to be there. Our DD was asking if we are going to her first home game today. Dad will be but mom wasn't able to get off early so will probably see only 15 minutes before moving on to the next calendar appointment of the evening.

Just thinking of this as the beginning of cutting the strings. Dad is adjusting to not catching her all the time and if she makes it to college ball there is no way we will make all her games (especially the out of state preseason tournaments). Since she does better when she knows her numbers and mom won't be there to track, we will need to remind her to check her stats with the coaches.

I think it sukks!! I know my dd doesn't need me to be there to play but I actually ENJOY watching her and if it was my dd's first HS game I'd sure the hell want to be there!!! They should give atleast a 24 hour notice. I was a school bus driver for 9 years and there is no way they would be able to get the driver without 24 hour notice so it sounds like the coach knew about it but didn't share the info until Sunday night. I'd be mad.

I've seen a bus and driver obtained in less than 2 hours on more than 1 occasion.

we don't even take a bus , parents coordinate the driving per the request of the head coach. so 5 sets of parents or so have to be available and off work.

as a parent if you got called tonight and told the dd's HS opener is tommorrow , and it wasn't on the schedule , and the game's an away game an hour from home . Not a makeup or a scrimmage . that it's a regular season game , added sunday night for monday . I like seeing the dd's games but with less than 24 hours notice I , and others can't make arrangements to be there . Am I wrong in being hacked off ?

we actually need the practice time as we have yet to spend 1 day practing outside on our own field. ?? MD

What actually is "HACKED OFF" anyhow?

Since you wanted opinions...... I'd say bummer, won't be able to make it. Just have to catch the next one and move on. Definitely not worth getting too upset over it. Important thing is if the DD can be there for her first varsity game.

Welcome to high school softball. Things can and will change on a moments notice. We've had game location changes made because one school's diamond may be under water while the home field was ready. We've had opponents change which changed location of game. We've had starting times changed, just about every scenario you can imagine. By the time your daughters are seniors, you'll have a handle on it.

The season is short in comparison to some other sports with a very limited time to prepare. Expect the unexpected. Keep the gas tank full and have a website or hotline at your fingertips up till game time. In our district, they have an agreement to make changes no later then 2pm???? I believe except for the possibility of a total cancellation. To be honest, that's about as fair as fair can be or you may find your season only being about 10 games plus tourney.

Just bite your lip and roll with it. Sorry.
