I just wanted to discuss here a little using a wristband system for pitch-calling. I've always been upfront with coaches re: some of the pros and cons of using a system for this. One of my hesitations in the past is about especially younger pitchers having to look at their wrist to know what pitch to throw ... about it messing up their rhythm. But in talking with coaches who have done them, the consensus is that they adapt quickly. The only other thing is that some coaches have their pitchers throwing so many different pitches to so many locations that a system can become less effective ... there's only so much room on the cards and to keep them effective you need to have a bunch of random combinations on the cards for the same pitch-location combination. I have figured out some ways to reduce that problem with the help of some coaches. Anyhow, if anyone is interested in a pitch-calling system and/or adding it to their current hitting and baserunning system, let me know and we can work together to make it happen ... and I can usually do these very inexpensively ... no more than $30 if you already have a system and bands from me.

The only part I don’t like is calling pitches with the wrist band systems. But defensive plays and alignments are great and offensively it is excellent.

My advice after using wrist bands the past 4 years at 18U, 12U, 13U is to be decisive and efficient as a coach. Get your sign out early so the players can find them quickly and not disrupt the rhythm of the game.

I always share with coaches who are interested the pros and cons, and different ways to use a wristband system for pitch-calling. It's a slam dunk for hitting and baserunning ... and some coaches I think use it pretty effectively for pitch-calling, but it doesn't work for everyone. Josh, I can't remember offhand if you're using my systems or not ... if you're not, give me a call sometime and I will share with you some possible alternatives.

Yes, I am still doing these systems. I know this is a slower time of year for coaches to be thinking about them, but the high school season is right around the corner. Give your team a leg up on the opponents by being able to effectively implement in-game strategy without worrying about whether your team will get it or the other team will steal it. With the holidays almost behind us and high school conditioning about to begin, now's a good time to be thinking about trying a wristband system, or updating your current one. I was able to negotiate a lower price on the wristbands a few months back, and have been passing the savings on to the teams that get them. If you get a system from me (usually $45 for 3 sets of signs), the wristbands are just $3.50 each. I am able to outfit most teams for just a little over $100 including shipping. And don't forget that $2 for every system sold is going to Stay in Softball ... I'm happy to say that I've donated over $330 to this very worthy cause since I started doing this. E-mail me at jffbaker3@gmail.com for more info.

Continued thanks for all of your support Jeff! We need to find a way to make wristbands the next new teen fashion statement. :)

Lol, thanks, Karen. I actually wouldn't want that! This is just a side hobby for me that keeps me close to the game. Glad to help out a few other coaches along the way if I can.

All caught up now with systems I've done for high school and college teams ... I could still turn around a high school system quickly before the weather finally gets better ... or if you're a younger travel team starting to think about getting outside, email me at jffbaker3@gmail.com for more info.

Hey Jeff, thanks again for the quick turnaround on year 2 of your wristband system. Anyone interested, Jeff is very responsive to emails, texts, and calls. Thanks also for your input and discussion as well, going into the second year of using his program. Hope to catch you out at a field one of these days Jeff! To coaches who are considering wristbands, just try it. It simplifies things. If you have a game plan and are efficient with what you, as the coach, want to do, it does not slow the game down. Good luck to all your teams out there folks. At the end of the day, it’s just a game but the lessons learned, team building/bonding and personal work ethic instilled pays dividends long after their playing days.
Wish you continued success Jeff!

Got some new youth wristbands in which are of a bit higher quality than the old ones ... hope to have some new adult ones too ... same prices still apply. Just a note to coaches who are thinking about a wristband system ... don't go out and buy wristbands first before you reach for me ... if you get a system, I provide the wristbands at just $3.50 each which is cheaper than you can buy them for yourself, and my systems are designed to fit into the wristbands I have.

As your travel seasons wind down and you get frustrated with your team missing signs or the opponents stealing them, consider going to a wristband system as you form your teams here in August. There are several ways to go about it including doing it yourself, but I can usually do a set of 3 customized and professional-looking systems and all of the wristbands you'll need for less than what you can buy the wristbands yourself. Over the last 5 years, I've done about 200 for travel teams, 100 for school teams, and about a dozen college teams. Email me at jffbaker3@gmail.com for more info.

After a little hiatus for my daughter's wedding, a trip to NYC to see my youngest son, and a very busy work schedule, I'm back in the saddle ready to answer any inquiries about wristband systems. Good luck to everyone as they finish up nationals and conduct tryouts for the coming year!

I do still do the wristbands ... I got one email yesterday (are you Mike?) and did reply this morning. Looking forward to talking with you.
