York PA??

I posed a question about York on the Tri-State Penns forum asking about safe York is. I receive the following reply... (He/She seemed more peeved about field maintainance)

Some of the fields are located on a college campus. Not sure how dangerous you would consider that to be considering the kids are gone for the summer.

What is most disappointing about York hosting is that the fields are taken care of by the city. They do not put down foul lines, pitcher circles, or batters boxes. In the event of rain, you're done. They don't touch them.

Ok, know this may have been a topic before, but was woundering who has been there and is there anything to do when not playing? Places to eat or any fun things to see?

I've heard car jacking is quite popular there. :lmao:

Just received e-mail back from the TD and one of my parents has a brother-in-law from the area. He said the only problem is yes nothing to do. . .crime same as any city of that size.

1st E-mail
Gretchen,

Well that's news to me. I was there and nobody brought any car break ins or muggings to my attention. York City Police cruise thru the complex regularly during events.

I am forwarding your e-mail to the York Visitor's Bureau and York City, to get their input.

thanks
Tina

Gretchen

In response to your concern, I spoke to our facility manager who told me that in his 40 year's operating the Hoffman Complex, he's had 1 car break-in that he's aware of.

I also asked the York's Parks Manager who said essentially the same thing. However, he did refresh my memory regarding an incident at last year's Eastern Nationals when the police had to be called to remove the coach of an Ohio team who was interfering with the staff trying to prepare the fields after one of the many, many rain delays we had last year.

You can believe whichever side you wish. As I stated before, York City Police regularly cruise the park even stopping to watch a few innings or grab lunch at the concession stand when time allows.

Of course, if you are really concerned and wish not to enter the tournament, just let me know ASAP and I will return your entries.

thanks

I am gathering from all of my investigative work that things are better than they were four years ago with average fields. Biggest issue would be field maintance during games from what others have said. . .

Here is an overview with a map that shows the highest crime rate areas. There is 94% of the country that is safer than York, PA acoording to these figures.

I would not suggest anyone cancel nationals. The fields we were at seemed perfectly fine as far as crime goes. Just use common sense and you will be fine.

Looked up Dayton and it has the same rates, just with more people. Like several others have said, just be cautious like you do if you are in Dayton, Cincy, or any other cities like that.

We went 2 years ago and had no problems. If I remember where we stayed I'll let you all know. One thing I do remember is that people drive VERY fast on this one particular freeway and there was NEVER any cops around! Needless to say, we were never late! There was also some great local resturants/bars on this particular road. hmmm I'll try to come up with some names..

Fields were ok and they had a great concession stand with hot breakfast and BBQ! Enjoy! I like going to off the wall places and checking out the local stuff!! We'll be in Virginia this year!

Sportsmom I was being tounge in cheek. We had no security problems but it is a very ugly place and you do have to drive through a few slums to get to the fields-- at least thats how my GPS took me.
