And for the win. Is it the right call though?

This was a couple of years ago. I’ve worked with two of these umpires, and actually worked a game with the plate umpire shortly after this. So, I had a chance to quiz him about this call.

The runner was obstructed between third and home. By rule, she can’t be put out between third and home. Next, the umpires have to decide if they think the runner would have scored, without the obstruction, or not. If yes, then award home plate. If no, then place the runner back on third base.

Replays I saw made me think that I would have put her back on third. But the umpire who was there was adamant that they judged she would have safely reached home. If that’s their judgment, then awarding home is 100% correct.

I don’t think there was ever any doubt about the obstruction, it obvious from other video’s I’ve seen of the play. Where the water gets muddied is if she should have been awarded home.‍♂️

Check out this playoff game from a few years back. The Umpires eventually got it half right on this play but the whole game had about 5 missed and a couple more questionable calls calls.
The umpire behind the plate in the video actually did Women's College World Series games.

The umpire that was at first base this game was at first base in the 2012 playoff game where the umpires had to be escorted out of the stadium/parking lot by the Colerain AD and several other adults when the fans got out of control over the bad calls (they were much worse than this game).

The 2012 contest was so bad the opposing coach from LM brought out a rule book to explain what an illegal pitch was and how it is to be handled.
The sad part was, the umpire called 11 illegal pitches in the last 3 innings of play (that were not even illegal) then the crew found out in the 7th base runners were awarded a base...the umpires took a 5-0 game in the 5th and turned it into a nail biter that the Cards held on for the 5-4W.
The umpires stopped the game in the 6th for about 15 min to have about 15 Colerain and Little Miami fans escorted out of the softball stadium.
Reportedly OHSAA asked for the game video that at one time was on you tube /way cross but now I cannot find it??? I will look in the archives and see if I can post it...
