Had a situation this weekend. Batters 8 (Emily) and 9 (Nancy) in the lineup as stated on the card. However, Nancy battered before Emily in the game. Both were out through grounders recording the 2nd and 3rd out of the inning. In the next inning the 1st batter (leadoff) in the lineup (Fran) got on base.

The other coach walked out and told the umpire about the batting out of order. The umpire called an out and made Fran bat again.

What do you think?

When the leadoff batter received a pitch, that made the at bat of the previous batter legitimate.

Since the previous batter was #8, the next proper batter should be #9. That means that #1 was batting out of order.

The penalty here is that the batter who should have been batting is called out. That would be #9.

The at bat by the improper batter (#1) is negated. She is removed from base and her at bat is cancelled. The correct batter is then whoever follows the batter that was called out. That means that #1 bats again.

It sounds like the proper ruling was made.
