My granddaughter was on the varsity softball team as a sophomore (now a junior). Recalling my high school days, I want to buy her a letterman jacket... do kids still wear them?

Proud Grandpa.

Make sure you check to see if they're still "cool" Also, the girls were getting the boys Varsity/leather sleeve ones when i bought them. I bought all 4 kids varsity jackets, the boys were laid back but the DD's looked like a billboard

re: "I'd say it depends on the high school."

I ask because I looked at the school's Facebook page. I looked at hundreds of pictures and no letterman jackets to be found.

I believe 9ball is on to the most accurate answer to this question. I've been removed from being directly involved for a few years now and at that time period it was not cool.

I was so proud of my daughter for earning a V-jacket and could probably count on 1 hand how many times she actually wore it. I bought it for her to be her main Christmas present because it took so long to get and the cost. I might as well gave her an empty box judging by the response.

In our school district the pride seem to diminish when the school introduced school jackets that were all but identical to letter jackets. If anything, the girls liked them better as they had a hood on them. There simply was no "identity" except for medals pined to the actual letter. The luster was lost.

I hope the tradition comes back. For now, when I drive by the school I don't see it.

I have been pricing jackets. With various customization, they can get quite expensive! Which brings up vague memories of news articles that I had read, many years ago. I recall reading that jackets were stolen through armed robbery. That is, they will take the jacket off of your back. I live in an urban area where this is a real fear.

I might still give it to her, but I do not relish the thought of having to warn her to be careful of where to wear it.

Kids don't even wear coats, let alone a letterman jacket.
