Umpires wearing shorts

Why O Why can't Umpires wear shorts. I feel so bad for our Umpires wearing a chest protector and all those clothes. One Ump teased me by saying that nobody would want to see his white legs. So what rules prohibits it? Out in the midday sun and temps in the 90's.

The official umpire uniform is described in the rule book. Unfortunately, it doesn’t allow shorts. Why? Who knows. That’s just the standard that’s evolved over time. I’m sure that it has something to do with “looking professional”.
