Agree with Sammy and backed up by the NFCA Beyond the Basics of Scoring Fastpitch Softball.....

On base percentage (OB%) = (base on balls + hit by pitch + hits) / (sac. flies +
base on balls + hit by pitch + official at bats)

Another note about a fielders choice. If a play is made for the lead runner rather than the batter going to first and everyone is safe, the batter is not credited for a hit but rather she got on base with a fielders choice.

I like to look at OBPE (On base including errors)

If I have two kids who have the following 10 at bats

#1 , 2 hits, 2 ground outs, 3 ROE, 1K, 2 BB, = .250 BA, .400 OBP and .700 OBPE
#2 , 2 hits, 2 Ground outs, 4K, 2 BB = .250 BA, .400 OBP and .400 OBPE

Kid #2 is producing offensively 40% of the time, Kid #1 70% of the time. I don't care if it's speed, voodoo hex or chance. If a kid gets on base thats more valuable to the team than striking out and should be recorded somewhere in the offensive statistics.

FC can be assigned whether a preceeding runner is put out or not. For statistical purposes I treat a FC where a preceeding runner is put out as a ground out, and a FC where a preceding runner is not put out I treat as ROE.

This is making up stat categories - but if you are using it for productivity OK.

The whole point of not including FC in OBP is that while the batter did reach, it was at the cost of an out. So it is hard to say that a FC is productive. If the defense plays on a lead runner, and through an error that lead runner is safe, then the scoring should be FC (E). I write the E in the box where the lead runner is, but no way should the batter get a ROE designation.

I get Mad Hornet and Snocatzdad's point about OBE being a factor in things. I also give that some credence. I will look first at OBS (or OBPS, on-base plus slugging), as that is the most telling stat to measure performance. It takes into account on-base average, batting average and ability to hit for power.

The only things OBPS doesn't take into account are stolen bases and caught stealing, reaching by error, the ability to move a runner up by hitting to the right side (which most girls don't have), and general baserunning ability. So I consider all those categories separately and kind of add them to the OBPS mix in my mind. If someone is regularly reaching by error, that matters in my mind. If a player is within a normal range of the rest of the team in reaching by error, then it's not much of a factor.

When I give our players our stats, the girls are listed offensively by OBPS, not by batting average.

My daughter was caught in the #2 batting spot sacrificing for our dragger. She swung her way out of that mess, but the sacrifices did not help her OBP. She could move the runner, but all the same, she prefers to swing away.
