For legitimate athletic competition to occur, clear constants must exist. A proper venue and the presence of participating teams are obvious requirements but without officials to ensure the participants play by the stated rules of the sports, the contests simply cannot take place. Officials are as integral to intercollegiate competition as balls, bats, hoops, student-athletes and coaches.
