JV and college aspirations

I think the key thing is to be on the diamond. No matter what position, each player has to work to be the best player she can. Repetition in game situations is what builds instincts, those automatic reactions that a player does without thinking because she's seen the same situation hundreds of times before. One lesson my dd learned last year is that all she can do is her best, after that she had to rely on her teammates.

Good advice. As a college coach, I am as interested in a parent's advice in how we run our program as they would be in my advice on how they do their job.

Joe:

You are a no-nonsense guy with good common sense so they probably should be interested in your advice! (unlike the many delusional parents who lack common sense).

I don't believe that I was pointing a finger at anyone in particular, forgive me if I did. But, there is not one person that has a daughter that participates in travel ball that can tell me they have not heard those same parents time and time again, talking about college and why their kid made or didn't make varsity. They are 13 and 14 year olds for god's sake. I guess as a parent, it is great to be hopeful, but give me a break. You have all seen these same parents paying up to $100.00 an hour for hitting lessons, pitching lessons and for most, I haven't seen the rewards for most. But, those parents brag that they spend it, therefore it isn't for the sake of the kid, it is for the sake of the parent's ego. If I was paying $100.00 an hour and my DD couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, I wouldn't tell anyone I was paying $100 an hour, lol. That's like bragging about paying to much for a car. I would love the opportunity someday to watch my daughter play college ball, don't get me wrong, but at the age of 15, I don't put much thought in it. Maybe when the college recruiters start contacting me, I'll start. I am aware there are some very talented players out there, the Queens of the crop, but they are few and far between. I'll settle for academic scholarship to YSU!

JoeA, I've been on a couple visits with my DD and talked with the coach. The coaches seem to have a "standard" talk I'm sure because you guys must repeat the same thing a billion times over the years.

if I may ask from your perspective as a college coach and recruiting, what interactions does the parents have other than tagging along with DD. Do you have a one-on-one with the parents? Do you watch the parents on a visit? What clues you in? Just curious...

I agree that good college coaches understand the politics that some times are involved in High school ball. Also, I feel players can do a lot to market themselves. All the college coaches I know, hit up travel ball. Then if they like what they see they will follow the player in school ball. JV or V.
