WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons were nipped 3-2 by the Oklahoma Panhandle State University Aggies and then fell 8-3 in their second game to the Midland University Warriors in the first day of the Friends Invite today (Mar. 6) at the Two Rivers Youth Complex in Wichita.

The opening tilt started on a positive note for the Falcons, with a two-run single by Renee Downey (SR/Modesto, Calif.) plating Laila Spracklen (FR/San Diego, Calif. ) and Hannah Lang (SO/Topeka, Kan. ) in the first inning resulting in an early lead.

But Jaylinn Reyes immediately answered for the Aggies with a two-run single of her own to tie the score in the second inning.

It remained 2-2 until Reyes again produced for the Aggies with a leadoff double in the fifth and scoring the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by Camryon Pryor.

OPSU starter Kaylor Battiest made it stand, holding the Falcons scoreless over the final six innings and finishing with 11 strikeouts. She allowed just the two runs in the first inning on two hits and four walks.

Hali Walters (JR/Longmont, Colo.) was also effective in the circle for the Falcons, striking out seven and walking just one while allowing three runs on five hits.

The second game was scoreless through the first two frames before the Warriors broke through with three in the third with the aid of a pair of Falcon miscues. Sierra Athow doubled home the first run and Bobbi Singleton and Carly Pfitzer followed with RBI singles.

The Warriors added a run in the fourth before a solo homer by Katlin Anders made it 5-0 in the sixth.

Three more errors in the seventh led to the Warriors tacking on three runs to lead 8-0.

Heather Scott (FR/Las Vegas, Nev. ) then helped the Falcons avoid the shutout by launching her first career home run in the bottom of the seventh, a three-run blast that scored Downey and pinch runner Laney Leath (SO/Las Vegas, Nev. ).

Friends starter Michelle Kroell (FR/Clovis, Calif. ) went 3 1/3 innings and allowed two earned runs with three strikeouts. Spracklen then came on for the final 3 2/3 frames with one earned run allowed and a career-high tying five strikeouts.

Hailee Fliam got the win for the Warriors after giving up three runs and striking out six over seven innings.

Anders, Athow and Pfitzer each had three hits for the Warriors.

Tomorrow (Mar. 7), the Falcons will wrap up the Friends Invite against Peru State College at 10 am and then No. 5-ranked Oklahoma City University at 2 pm.
