Team USA vs Japan

Was Bustos being a "team" player when she jacked that pitch out of the park to make the score 2-1 in the gold medal game? Was she being a "team" player when she popped up? Struck out? Walked? What the heck does "team" have to do (other than getting a bunt down from time to time) with whether or not the players can hit top-level pitching? You can be the greatest teammate in the world, but if you can't hit, you're pretty much worthless when it comes to helping your team to score runs. Choosing a bunch of players who know each other and are friendly with each other does not constitute creating a great team.

Here's how you do it:

1. Advertise a tryout.
2. Hold a tryout.
3. Choose the most talented players to stay for a second tryout.
4. Narrow the field to 12 players plus 4 alternates based on talent.
5. Explain to the players that if they can't get along, they'll be replaced.
6. Go play some exhibition games.
7. Go to the olympics and win the gold medal.
8. Go home.

Here's how NOT to do it:

1. Hold a tryout only for players invited by the coach.
2. Choose players based on popularity with the fans.
3. Choose players based on whether you were their college coach or whether they
played well when you coached against them.
4. Choose players you have the hots for.
5. Refuse to recognize any player from east of the Mississippi.

Whatever man lol, your impossible to debate anything with, you just start making stuff up. There are so many assertions into your comments I would think your a political journalist.

Don't make a mountain out of a mole hill.

My Thoughts:

1) The best players were not on the team (You never proved me wrong, even though you continue to talk about "Team" having no idea if getting a few better players would help or hurt team Chemistry.

2) Tincher should have been on the team. Assuming Abbot pitched the Semi's, Tincher pitches the Gold medal game. (never EVER said she was better then Abbot, you made that up lol)

3) Cat never has her best stuff in Do or Die big games against good teams, I offer the fact she was the ACE on some very good Texas teams and never made it to the finals, you offer "her stats say otherwise" I also state I could be wrong, and it might be MY perception of her.

Btw you VASTLY overrate the "Team" concept in Softball. Basketball, V-ball, Hockey, ******, Football etc, having good team chemistry very critical for running plays etc, softball, give me 12 studs that hate each other, including a beast in the circle, you can have your avg. team that all loves each other and lets see who wins 9 out of 10 games.

You can not lay the team selection on Candrea alone. There was a committee of 5 that chose the team

Truth,

With all your worldly knowledge you should have been the selection committee. IMHO YES Bustos was being a team player when she jacked the home run. She did what she could do to help her team.

You ever play the game? I have and I have seen some of the best hitting teams be shut down - here's a thought for you old wise one "pitching beats hitting" Why do you think the mound was pushed back - to help the hitter. You argue against yourself when you talk about the great ptching performance of jAPAN, Now - thats were a compatable, integrated, united team comes into play because sometimes you can be motivated as a group to win.

We have all seen a team being dominated all game -then a blooper by a lonely player drops in or a HR gets a overwelmed team motivated to be nearly unstoppable.

Now tell us about all your hitting experience and knowledge.

Uber,

I never made anything up to debate you, I used a poor choice of words when I stated "your comments" should have used your inferences, that Tincher is the best and c/would have won the gold easy without question. It might be better to just say that too may be one of your perceptions. Lets just let you say Tincher was the savior and was left behind, because I believe that is what you believe. I can repect that!

I believe you don't realize the importance of the team concept, You ever win a National Championship game or play on a National Championship Team? I have some experience with it and I can tell you - that the best athletes do not always win. Just as the best Michigan Athletes did not win in the biggest upset in history, next too the Russians beating the USA Basketball team IMHO.

You must have talented players
You must be motivated to win
You must feel part of something bigger than YOURSELF
You must be willing to SAC your ego to benifit the whole
You must accept to be managed so that you are prepared to perform
You must believe (faith) that you can do what it takes to win

Now - I will take the above over your 12 close minded -self award seeking studs, and beat you everytime, if I can get past your beast at least once during the game.

I never said everyone needs to be happy or best friends, I never said you don't need talented players. I do not believe that the US sent over a group of best friends with no talent do you.

I've been reading this thread with great interest. I really think there IS a bottom line. Here it is: Team USA didn't get it done. They faced Ueno twice in a couple of days. She made a mistake or two in the extra innings and lost the first game. She learned from the experience and only made one mistake (Bustos' homer) in the gold medal game. Team USA's manager chose to go with a lesser pitcher in the gold medal game rather than use Abbot, who had just baffled the Japanese and likely would have learned from the experience and been even BETTER. He used Osterman for all the wrong reasons: Her name recognition; to make her happy; to spread the glory; and worst of all--- because he was counting on a weak-hitting lineup to score a lot of runs. He was dazzled by the phoney stats his hitters had compiled against relatively weak pitching. What he really needed was a no-hitter from the circle. Abbot was the only one who could have provided that. His smugness cost The United States a gold medal that should have been guaranteed.

Moral of the story: You can mess around in the pool games. When it comes to the title game, you have to play to win. Lovie Jung? LOL. Kellie Kretchman? LOL. Osterman over Abbot? LOL.

Sporse.Truth DID play, here is a quote from him:

"I've got something you can bite on, but I can't afford to lose it right now. Here's something else: I PLAYED division I baseball and professional baseball; and I PLAYED fastpitch softball at the World Class level for many years. Played shortstop, batted third, hit over .400. Jenny Finch might have been carried as our team's fourth pitcher at certain tournaments."

Why do people insist on referring to a MOUND in softball? There is no MOUND in softball! Baseball references are so ingrained they seem to just never go away! Softball is it's OWN sport! Please notice that there is a CIRCLE around the pitcher's plate, but no mound anywhere on the field. When referencing the pitcher - she's "in the circle", not "on the mound".

Nit Picky? Well, if there's a mound in softball, there must be a 7th inning stretch somewhere! :D

We played at least 5 games this year with a mound. LOL

Point well taken, I think the rule book refers to the rubber and circle.

The mound has been eliminated from my usage except when it is behind the pitcher and sometimes in the circle

God Bless and Good luck this year to All

MustOhioFastpitch,

You would think with all that info on him - somebody would have figure out who he is.

Wow! Instead of worrying about thetruth08's identity, you should be worrying about why people have to hire interpreters to tell them what you're trying to say. Forget the softball clinics and read a book.

Yeah, but you know Uber was the Audio/Visual kid who was in charge of the movie projector and had the keys to the equipment room. He was always getting out of class early so he could go set up, taking his time hangin' in the halls---wheelin' and dealin', lol.
