Shut down Rancho Secho Nuke plant in the middle of no where, California:

Ok,,,

So when I took these I was in the middle of no where in the frickin desert in California. The only sounds out there were of cattle stirring in the night on a nearby ranch and of mosquitos that were about the size of a pterodactyl buzzing my head every few seconds.

I probably caught zika.... Twice.

Anyway.

I wasn't getting anything good, then the sun went down and the lights kicked on. As it got darker my decent shots turned really bad ones and I thought to myself:

"Self,,, what can make these **** poor shots turn out at least half*****???"

The answer was let there be light.

I opened my shutter for as long as I could keep it open, hit the button, jumped in the car, and drove directly through the shot.

I would drive up the road, turn around, come back, do it again.

That, my friends, made all the difference.

Brah,,,

I've got an 8mp camera that I paid 250 for on craigslst, it came with 1 18-55mm and 1 75-300.

I'm not even sure what that means.

One is longer than the other.

So,,, one or the other.

I'm not real sure.

Well you can take a lower end camera and use quality lenses on them and get better shots than the other way around that's why I asked I also have the 18-55mm vrii and the 55-200mm vrii and the lens you are working with the 70-300mm attached to my Nikon D5500 like you I just started shooting and made adjustments along the way. I started in manual mode and just figured it out that way however when trying to shoot action I will shoot in shutter priority trying to get that shot of contact at the plate or that play at second anyway its been fun along the way learning all the different things that make the shot look good and some of my best shots are an accident lol but whatever it works.

I know some of you ***** have over priced cameras. I've seen you.

Let's see it.

You've gotta be better at this picture game than a hunk-0-white trash with an IQ of 57.

Amirite???

Ima geek for this topic. You're totally right about that Westler. The sensors in the more costly newer cameras are faster and crisper. And if you can part with what feels like more $ than you should at the time, long after the cost is forgotten, the quality will be remembered (ahem, at least I tell myself that). If I had $10 to spend, I'd put $6.50 into the lens. I've had some professional photographers tell me "it's all about the glass". I finally invested in a better camera and lenses about 2 years ago and then schooled myself in shooting by reading lots of photographer's how-to blogs + listening to podcasts and it upped my game a lot.

Here's a tip I found, if you live near Cincinnati, CBus or Cleveland, go to Dodd Camera and rent a lens for the weekend. If you rent on a Friday afternoon, you can keep it out for the whole weekend but only get charged for a day. If you want to try a higher end camera and lens, it's really not that costly to get amazing shots of your kid that you'll keep forever. I've rented some pretty kickass lenses for like $30-40 for the weekend. I've even recently taken to renting specific lenses for vacations. I just had a great lens out for about a week for about $100, which would have cost around $1500-ish if I bought it new.

Then, if you shoot RAW format and use Adobe Lightroom or even Photoshop to process, you'll be amazed at what you can do with the photos.

this is at a Racer's game this summer, through the netting behind homeplate, towards dusk, still a nice crisp shot of the pitcher in motion.

Right over here!
Oh boy this can get messy... Use a full frame camera once you try it you will never used a crop sensor again. Prices are way down and can be had under $1000 used. You can take some of the best pictures regardless of light. Crank up the ISO and have a lowest aperture lens your money can buy. The graininess on a crop sensor makes post production a task. Use photoshop or light room and you will have the best photos. Should we start a zoom lens Vs prime debate?

Depending on the original dpi setting and not going to crazy with the cropping, I've had pretty good luck with the cropping
I've done. Not grainy good clarity, of course the original file is ginormous!!!!!

I talked to a woman last weekend, the conversation went like this:

Random woman with camera: This is full frame, it's sssssssooooooooooo much better.

Me: Really, how so?

Random woman with camera: It's better. It just is?

Me: Ok.... how though???

Random woman with camera: It takes much better pictures...

I've been around the world 3 times, been to 2 world's fairs, and to 1 goat ******* since the last time I logged in here.

I did manage to snap a few pics with my shoddy crop sensor camera and then to edit them with my 2nd rate editing program.

Nice shots! Did you happen to use a neutral density filter in that last one or was the water milky because of a long exposure only? Have you ever tried one of those filters? I just got one last Summer and they're really awesome if you shoot moving water, for instance.

You don't need a filter at night.

I think it was 30 seconds long exposure and I can't remember what aperture I settled on. If there are people who can look at something and know what their aperture needs to be set at I haven't met them. I'm definitely not one of them. I end up taking 8 or 10 shots until I figure out what works best.

100 ISO.
