What Do I Do?

May I suggest seven letters that will:
A. Let your DD get the experience
B. Help others in need out?
It's called REC BALL. I may get flack, but I think that any first year TB player who was told that she will the "backup" should have a contingency plan so that she can still get innings pitched to a catcher with an ump with a batter standing there through the entire summer. My DD did that in the exact same scenario so she was not as bummed when she only pitched every 4th or 5th game, because in REC she was the go to girl who pitched 22 games that summer. It didnt matter that the REC batters weren't that good, because when you are a novice pitcher, it's all about learning to throw hard to the catcher and throwing that change up in when needed. She got all of her worm burner and over the backstop changeups out of the way during the week and by the next year was no longer riding the bench.

It is a very tricky thing to get your dd on a team that will:

1. Challange her - you only get better by playing with and against better kids
2. Play her - need to get out there on the field regardless of the age - she needs to play
3. Not play under her competition - She will get alot of playing time but hate it cause it is not challenging her

My suggestion is to ask around and get her with a coach that you trust. At her age, it is about playing time and getting coached and getting better - in a few years (4) - it will be about getting recruited. For now, play for a coach you know and trust or at least have researched and get private lessons if you can afford it. Most important - make sure she is having fun!

I feel that rec ball is a very useful tool for a young pitcher. They need innings with a batter in the box. I have known several pitchers that can throw fast and accurate in the back yard all day long but as soon as they get a batter in the box the pitches get slower and less accurate. They really need the reps for confidence if anything else.
