is this mainly a 12u problem ? Tons of teams looking , Nearly zero players looking for teams . Hope it doesn't make for a ugly spring . I'm tired of any and all drama. MD

Crush,

Stay the course. Once they do leave rec ball, they can never go back, especially if they are talented. They will hate it. Also, some of my DD's best friends are her travel ball mates.

travel player going back to rec ball = playing guitar hero at hard/expert, then playing it at easy (girls should relate to this equation!)

Re: How may girls will be without a team come spri

Someone above said the teams with "street cred" or a high school coach who is known probably aren't having any trouble. Well, I think by this point we (Buckeye Heat) have street cred and I am at least a somewhat known high school coach and am coaching our 12-U (Heat 95) team and am a non-parent. I imagine many people who read OFC know that the 18-U team I've coached for a long time has all 12 of its girls who will play college softball and all nine of our 2008 girls are signed, except for one who will play DIII. Trying to look at it objectively, I would think that sounds like a pretty good situation to join a 12-U team.

However, we have 10 girls and I've had a thing on here for a couple of weeks looking for one (or maybe two) more players. I've had three responses. One girl had to pitch, so that wasn't going to work. One family couldn't commit to our schedule. And the other we'll be trying out soon.

I sometimes see coaches posting things like they'll get back to the dozens of e-mails they've been receiving when they have time. My educated guess is that's usually a lie.

Joe,

I could see where sometimes too much street cred could hurt you. I can see some girls being intimidated to try out for a top flight team / org.

There is definetly some truth to that , last fall we guest played during the fall tryout period with a "large" org . Don't know how nervous the DD was but I had some jitters/doubts/concerns. Stepping up from small travel/community teams to a large organization where you know no one is somewhat daunting. But I'll say this --give it a try , it may be a good fit. MD

Re: How may girls will be without a team come spri

There are some replies here by some very knowledgable and HIGHLY qualified coaches, one of the common threads I am sensing is the frustration in finding players that want to commit to the environment of a serious and dedicated team.

I am not amazed by the issues with 10's/12's/or even 14's, many of these girls that are exceptional athletes are still playing multiple sports, this was a battle we fought for several years until their HS situation made them commit to one sport or another, another of the big problems at these ages is you have a larger number of players that think of themselves as pitchers and despite their ability level (mostly due to having just gotten serious about it recently), their parents are being advised by their pitching instructor and others to play on a team where they will get the ball often.

Add to this dynamic that has been a standard for years the fact that, I am certain there has been a large increase in the total number of teams that consider themselves to be "serious travel teams" and whose aspirations are high, and you must at some point suffer through a period of readjustment, whether that is this year or not I can't say but there are a lot of teams still looking for players, in some cases half a team, for those teams looking for 4 or more players my suggestion is they start looking for a team in a similar situation and let both coaches put their ego to the side and put your players minds at ease, in past years at times we have struggled with filling teams, and as stressful as this is for the coaches, the girls really worry about their team. Fortunately for our teams we always (with the exception of a serious illness one season) have managed to find the talented players that we needed, I have always maintained "god takes care of fools and drunks" and since I qualify on both counts, I have that going for me!! LOL just kidding, I am really not a fool!!! LOL (the fact is I am pretty sure I am not alone here on OFC!!)

In any case I don't mean to make light of what is shaping up to be a serious issue in the upcoming 2008 summer season, and the fact is that while all our teams have 11-12 solid locked in players, I know they are all looking for at least one final piece of the puzzle, as a matter of fact, I have told them that I felt that there would be players available as things shake down, the other point to be made is the question of: Does this serious issue now predict a number of teams folding as the summer season goes on, if teams end up just "filling" their rosters with bodies, what happens when they start losing players to the pressure of a summer of travel ball, lets face it we have all agreed at one time or another it's not a sport, it's a lifestyle, and not every family is suited to that lifestyle.

The only thing I know for sure is that come July (maybe June!!) we will start to see the postings for "new teams" and multiple teams, and we will have to question again at what point are there too many teams.

Not sure there are any answers, everyone with the energy, and the willingness to learn and teach their kids, should have a chance to coach, those are good motives, I sense there are some teams out there, where the motivation and agenda is not quite so noble!

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I will stay on course!! We have found a home in travel ball and my DD best times are ahead of her in this. We just started last year as a part time thing and this year moved to full time. It has been sooo fun and we can't wait to see what this year brings....

Re: How may girls will be without a team come spri

My DD played on a travel team 2 years ago that used those "bodies" to fill in. We had 9 solid players and 3 girls who had (sorry if I offend) no business in travel ball. The only time they played was if we were way ahead. Sometimes the coach would start, they invariably would not catch an easy ball or struck out every time they came to bat. Then they would get pulled. Their parents had to pay money for their daughters to play/participate. And they were none too happy. To me, the coach did a grave injustice to these girls, their parents, and the other players. I know it is impossible to play with only 9 girls, girls get hurt all the time. But is it fair to fill up a team with bodies?

The following year was just the opposite, we had too many girls playing. Started out the season with 15 girls. That meant 6 girls every inning sat the bench. That was just too many girls! This year she is on a new team and can't wait to play! This team is more about teaching the girls, than about how much money they can get by adding extra girls. (We had to pay $900 each last year).

I think that's a rip off >:(. To play for 900 bucks and only play 7 tourneys and not even go to nationals.
