Agoch ... like you, I seldom complain about umpires but I have to agree with you about the umpires in Massillon. Two of the 18-U home plate umpires I had were absolutely atrocious with their strike zones. The one was extremely inconsistent, and both of my pitchers and our catcher were totally confused and frustrated. While I was coaching third, the other coach and I were talking about it with each other. Plus he appeared to have an extremely short fuse ... on one of his calls I gave a long sigh and he stopped and glared my way, and I managed to avoid eye contact with him while I was giving the catcher the next sign.
The other ump was relatively consistent, but he kept calling low pitches that were a good 6-12 inches off the plate, and as low as the ankles a strike for both teams and it was just totally unhittable. My pitcher loved that of course and took pride in hitting that spot the rest of the game, but hitter after hitter kept coming back just shaking their heads. Several times the catchers were literally diving for the pitches and I can remember two that even went off their gloves but he just kept calling strikes. I always hear the "as long as they're consistent" but come on, the pitch at least has to be hittable! One of my hitters asked me if she was allowed to throw the bat at the ball because that was the only way she could get a bat on it.
