First Time for everything....

The situation I"m about to describe was surreal when it happened. ?So, I thought I would just see if anyone else out there has witnessed anything like it.

DD is pitching and there is a runner on 3. ?Batter hits a slow roller down the 1st baseline. ?DD and runner get to the ball at about the same time (dd about a step or 2 ahead) and dd tags runner low. ?Runner falls and rolls on the ground after the tag and the ump stops the game before dd could make the throw to home. ?DD walks back to the circle and ump follows her and insists that dd walk over at that very moment to apologize to the girl she just tagged out:-?

Nothing wrong with an apology after the play is over and you make the double play. Of course that is up to your DD to do that, in my opinion. Why the ump did such a thing is beyond any of us but we do get some good ones every now and then. Did he make the runner go back to third? What was his reasoning for doing this? I am sure the coach asked for a reason why, at least I would hope so anyways.

DD ended up not having to make the throw 'cause the runner held up (probably beacuse of all the confusion). Coach asked why dd was being forced to apologize and was told that 1) they wanted to make sure the runner was okay, and 2) they can stop the game if they feel she was bleeding. I've never seen anyone bleed from getting tagged.

DD would have approached the runner on her own after the game. Not sure if she would have apologized, but she would have wanted to make sure the kid was ok....

I must say that I have seen kids bleed from getting tagged but the play should still continue until it is fully over. Sounds like you had an umpire that was either over conscious or just ignorant to the game. I hope all worked out well and did not cause issues with the out come of the game.

You're probably right about the ump. She must be ignorant to the game. If she was over conscious, she would have stopped the game when dd's pitching arm was bleeding :-/

It certainly didn't impact the outcome of the game, but confused the heck out of dd...

Stopping the play is ridiculous. What age was this? Good grief, did the ump want them to hold hands and sing cum-ba-yah also? Seriously, every sport comes with the chance of injury and roughness. Maybe that umpire should think about judging chess matches instead. I'm not saying an apology wasn't in order, but maybe at the end of the game when they're all saying their "good game" stuff. Good grief.

TBones:

I agree. Give the players a chance to make their apologies on their own, if/when an apology is due. I'm not quite convinced an apology was in order, as dd wasn't malicious when making the play. I do think an "Are you ok?" is warranted, but not in the middle of the play/game.

This was 12U age division.

I don't see why there was an apology needed. ?Other then for being a good sport. ?Umpires should seriously just call the game. ?They spend to much time trying to coach players. ?We had an ump tell all girls that if they were wearing sliding guards that they had to be pulled up and into position or they could not bat. ?If you didn't have guard on that was OK they could bat. Sat What .......
Umpires should ump ?.....
Coaches should coach .........
The girls should be just allowed to play ......
;D

This could not have been a sanctioned ump. Was it a rec all-star type tournament? Now, I've seen umps call time at the very instant the runners stop and the play appears dead if there was a serious looking injury. Happened to us twice when our pitcher got hit in the game face from a batted ball.

One would think the opposing team would be a little upset over the stoppage of play too. Sounds as though a bit of a scrum took place and could have been enough comotion to send her home from 3rd.

Glad to see I'm not the only one thinking this was a little over the top.

Never heard of it here either! WOW.. DD has had allot of rough tag outs as a catcher, she would say sorry if she felt she hurt them. But she wasn't "told" to do anything by any umpire.
